Why can't I just be honest in a job interview and be hired based on merit?

That is why you should ask questions, so they can hear what they want to hear. The world is not what we want it to be, but how we can adjust to it. Be what they want, and you will be hired, be yourself at home or with friends. Be your work person on the job and you will be successful.
