Lots of folks I know have been taking up long distance (marathon) running - and usually cite it as a tremendous personal goal and an opportunity for a major endurance gain. Besides, there's the 'runner's high'. However, I have also heard from others, including folks in the medical profession, that training for and running in a marathon is a terrible thing to do - because no matter how much you attend to form, it is a lot of wear and tear to your joints that you will regret when you're older. Is there an official medical position on running marathons? Recommended or discouraged?

I have to tryout for a soccer team soon. (Tips for that would be great)

But the problem is, I run out of energy too fast. Just a couple minutes of running, and I'm out of breath. How can I improve on this? Using a treadmill? Going up and down on stairs? unning down the block?

(I've played soccer before though, but it always comes down to I run out of energy.)

My boyfriend and I have been working out together since January, and a huge amount of cardio has gotten me to drop 25+ lbs. Just recently, he told me that it was time to move from the treadmill to outdoors, and that is going well. I run just over 2 miles, 3 times a week. One or two hours before i run, i have a bowl of All Bran cereal with milk. Should i eat after i run? Normally, i don't feel like it. I do not want to gain weight, and nor am i allowed to lose any more. If i should eat after i run, what should it be, and how much of it?

Thanks

i am a 24 y o male which is slightly overweight (BMI:26). i've registered for a 7km race that would be on this Sunday morning (4days to go) but i haven't trained yet. i have cycled 10km in alternate days for a month before but the last time i jogged was 2 weeks ago and the distance was around 3,4km.

when i was in high school (and 8 kg lighter), i was in the top ten for 10km run. BUT after 7,8 years (+ 8 kg) is it possible for me to train myself in this 4 days to finish the race in time?

any advice, suggestion and help would be much appreciated.

thanks....

Well it was a bad idea to run with 2 year old worn out shoes so I think I got shin splints on my left leg only. Football(soccer) season starts August 8th. Now I dont think this is nothing big, I just felt the pain a little DURING the running and I felt it more when I stopped and walked home. Any home remedies for treating this? I just put ice on it for now. I heard that the best way to treat shin splints is to rest and put ice on them. Again, it doesnt hurt too much and it doesnt hurt at all when im walking or standing.

So yeah, I plan to not run until August 8 but how many times a day should I put ice on it? Thanks.

Is it great for slimming the thighs, firming the butt, and toning the abs? Also, what brand of shoes would be best to run with? How long should I warm up beforehand, and what should I do to warm up? Thanks to anyone who answers.

I have been out of the gym for a few months. However I used to be a runner. I am wanting to get back into shape and support a worthy cause by training for the upcoming 10K race. I have 4 weeks. Today is July 24th and the race is Sept 3rd. I am starting a training program today. Any advice would be very helpful. How many miles should I start in the first week that is not over doing it? To start I'm going to Walk, Run, Walk, Run. But My main questions is for how many miles and what should my average per mile be???

Thanks so much for your advice!
