ankles shouldn't swell just from running too far/fast.
Thus you have damaged something (difficult to tell what, as the ankle is many tendons, muscles and bones)
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation - and go see a Dr or PT

You might have sprained it.
Ankle sprain can occur regardless of the distance of running. What causes ankle sprain is bad positioning - maybe step into a pothole or off a curb can easily cause some sprain.
I agree with RICE - Rest, Ice, Compession, and Elevation. Heat may also help. Also try some antiinflammatory such as Motrin or Advil. Finally, I would wrap the ankle and stay off running until it is better. If not better, go see a family doctor or orthopedics.

....uhhhhhh....because you doubled your normal daily mileage in one run ?????
There's a difference in how we run in a race compared to how we run when we're just training. Chances are you tried to push harder, maybe you didn't notice the difference in the running surface.... WHO KNOWS??
What you did was incur an overuse injury. If you have any inkling of pain, see a doctor. In any case, take at least a week off from running, then reevaluate your pain/flexibility/swelling situation. If you have any doubts, take another week off.
When I started running, I ran for 2 weeks when my ankles swelled up. After 2 weeks rest, I started back and never had the problem again.
Good Luck

i used to get fluid in my knees usually after running on hard surfaces. never could figure it out because it didn't hurt at all but ice and a good massage did the trick.
