Is it great for slimming the thighs, firming the butt, and toning the abs? Also, what brand of shoes would be best to run with? How long should I warm up beforehand, and what should I do to warm up? Thanks to anyone who answers.

Q1+2: It will definitely slim thighs, firm butts, tone abs (to some degree). More importantly, it will lower your cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, lower your heart rate, lower your chance of developing diabetes/heart attack/stroke. It also will boost your immune system (with few miles run only, not marathons), your bone strength (to prevent osteoporosis), and your agility/stamina. It also help with depression and anxiety.

Q3: You should find the brand of running shoes that you are comfortable with. Everyone is different and will use different shoes. Don't go cheap on shoes, spend at least $40-50 on a pair of RUNNING shoes. Go to a running store and have the salespeople help you.

Q4: Warm up at least 5-10 minutes, with stretching, slow walking, deep breathing.

It is not really about how many miles you put into it, but how much time you put into it. And it is ok to do strength and cardio in the same session, however you can eaisily overtrain your nervous system that way. The best routine, is to do them in the same day, but not in the same session. Give your body 4-6 hours to recooperate between workouts. (cardio first, then weights) First thing in the morning, your body is in a fasted state (empty of glycogen, a stored form of carbohydrates), so your body will rely more on fat stores for an energy source. (best time for cardio) Try this. Morning. (empty stomach) 30-45 minutes of your choice of cardio. Wait 1 hour (to keep the fat burning going) Eat something small and healthy every 2 1/2 hours. (1/3 of a portion) After 4-6 hours. Do your weight training. Eat immediately after, (and also eat small meals every 2 1/2 hours. Good Luck.

I found that running really helped shape up my thighs, calves, and even my arms a bit (from moving them while working out).
Burning those extra calories definitely is a help. The one thing running doesn't do is work on the abs, unfortunately. For that you need to work on various ab excercises: crunches, bicycles, etc. As for shoes, that is a personal preference. Go to a store that sells running shoes. In a good store, the sales person knows a lot about the current shoes and can help you with fit. Basically, you should buy a brand name that feels good . Try running in the new shoes in the store, or if they let you, around the block.. As for warming up, I usually do a light jog for about 5-10 minutes, and then stretch. Good luck with your running program!

Exercise is important to weight loss, as well as for your heart and other health. There is some thought that it may play a part in preventing diabetes as well. Health magazines, newsletters, and the results of scientific studies tell us that we need to take 10,000 steps a day. I use a pedometer -my brain doesn't want to count that high. When we slim down, we do tone the muscles of our body, but if you want to work on specific areas a personal trainer could help you do that.

Walking is said to be the best exercise because we don't pound our joints so hard. There is also less risk for injury by stepping on uneven concrete, sticks, etc.

Exercise revs up our metabolism, causing us to burn more fat. There is some doubt whether warming up actually prevents injuries. To do it, the purpose is to stretch out the muscles so they can be more flexible while you run or walk. If you start walking, then move to running, that will do it.
