Two factors come to mind -- genetics and longevity.

Most of the top runners in the world over long distances are from Eastern Africa. Considering that a great many factors (training, etc.) are even these days, this is not much of a coincidence. You have to think genetics is a factor, just like all of the sprinters come from West African origins. It's racist to assume this is the only factor, but you really have to at least acknowledge it.

As for economics, Kenya and Ethiopia are pretty poor parts of the world. Running purses is a powerful incentive to support the family and climb out of poverty. There are a great many runners in Kenya, and the good athletes go in that direction. Americans are predisposed to go into something other than long-distance running these days.

Not all Kenyans are faster than other runners. There are only a few groups that have this ability. The country has a very good development program to find and train their gifted runners. They live at high altitude and walk and run long distances while growing up. The economy is limited and they recognize that if they are successful they can provide for themselves and their extended families, so they have an incentive to work hard. Many come here to attend college, which is limited in their country. As far as their physical structure if you look at the Kenyans they have a much longer femur than most people. This gives them a longer lever so they can run more efficiently. You can develop distance runners, but they must possess the tools or inherited traits first.

the guy above me asserting Kenyans run faraway from lions is an entire fool. you have no theory with regards to the existence form of this human beings and clearly you're a egocentric individual. All of this an element, it relies upon what you advise with the aid of who's the main suitable. Kenya has Leonard Komon, Eluid Kipchoge, Isaac Songok, Sammy Kitwara, Sammy Wanjiru, Joseph Ebuya, Geoffrey Mutai, Paul Tanui, Isaiah Koech, Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, Wilson Kipsang, Patrick Makau, David Rudisha, Asbel Kiprop, Silas Kiplagat, Augustine Choge, Moses Masai, Vivian Cheriyout, Linet Masai, Lornah Kiplagat, Mary Keitany, Daniel Kipchirchir Komen, and a set of different athletes i won't have the capacity to think of of off the actual of my head. Ethopia has Yenew Alamirew, Kenny Bekele, Tariku Bekele, Haile Gebrsalassie,, Sileshi Sehen, Deriba Merga, Dejen Gebremeskal, Gebregziabher Gebremariam, Dire track, Teyba Erkesso, Bezunesh Bekele, Berhane Adere, and tons greater. you will discover Kenya has slightly greater intensity(21 to 12 besides the shown fact that there is a lot greater yet those are the great athletes), yet particularly some the Ethopian athletes indexed above have carried out better than there Kenyan opposite numbers and had longer careers. So it relies upon the place you're observing it from, or your attitude. they're the two great working countries nevertheless.

I agree with wdx2bb and lestermount.

Genetic is probably the one single most important factor. There are many African runners, but only a small group in Kenya as well as very small pockets in a few countries are consistently winners. Good gene + good training = world class athlete.

In addition, keep in mind that Keyans are very thin. Thinner body habitus will allow your body to dissipate heat faster.

As a result, they don't get as hot as rest of us fatter Americans during the race, and they sweat less.

Heat is generated with exercise, and heat causes fatigue as well. Our bodies perform only at a certain temperature range, and above that, you can have faster breakdown and slower performance. Being thin is a major advantage. That is also why most of the top runners are very thin.

Sweating less means they have more fluid reserve in the body, and they don't have to slow down for water as much. Sweating less also means that their bodies can clear the creatinine and lactic acid better, so there is less muscle fatigue and less muscle breakdown.

Oh, worry, we have not isolated the genes for running faster. If we did find one, I am injecting them to myself first.

Kenya is a poor country that doesn't have very many of one thing that we do....CARS!

They run for transportation. How much better would Americans run if we had to run just for daily life.

i think it is because they don't wear shoes, and the ground in kenya can get hot. and maybe they train being chased by lions...or maybe it is because they are so thin, they have no fat to get in the way and their legs can stretch so much farther than other people.
