[64] Chavel 1967, v.I, 200f. The Bible references are Deuteronomy 20:17 and 25:19.

This obligation is commented by Rabbi Chavel:

"This Commandment ... will be better understood in the light of the following passage from the 'Mishneh Torah': 'We are not to engage in war with anyone whatever unless we [first] proclaim peace to him; [this is applicable to both] an optional and an obligatory war; for it is said, When thou drawest nigh a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it (Deut XX, 10). If [the inhabitants] accept the offer of peace... we are not to slay a soul among them, and they merely become tributary, for it is said, [All the people ... therein] shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee'." (Ibid.)

****** OLD TESTAMENT COMMAND BY THE LORD OF ABRHAM : ***********

1) Give them the option of peace (to become believers)
2) If they want to keep their religion, they must pay the Tribute (Head Tax)
3) If they deny the above two options then fight them.

In other words, if the city's inhabitants object to being subdued/enslaved, they have to be slain nevertheless. Also sparing their life directly contradicts Negative Commandment 49 (see note [65]).

"We must not make a covenant with idolaters, to agree on keeping peace with them or accept them practising idolatry, because it says (Deut 7:2) Thou shalt not make a covenant with them. Either they give up idolatry or they are killed. And it is forbidden to pity them, since it says (ibid.): Nor shalt thou shew mercy unto them.

Words from the OLD TESTAMENT.

If Christians believe Jesus is God then he is the God of the Old Testament and therefore they cannot deny that GOD commanded this for the believers.

In other words, does He want only people who quote the Bible by chapter and verse while not really understanding it, or does He want His people to be able to intelligently and soundly crush the arguments of their opponents with logic and sound reasoning?

And please, I am NOT implying that Christians are stupid or incapable of logical, rational thought. This question is in response to a pattern I've noticed in here describing my initial query.

Kinda stealing from the spongebob girl! I agree, the Christian/Atheist relationship on here is like that of the youngest child/middle child relationship! We can agree on virtually nothing, yet we all still need people. Who are you loving today? It can be serious, silly, or both. (please, both!) I'm gonna say my darling Nicole. That's who I'm loving!

Aren’t there as many “gods” as there are people who admit to having a “god”?

People speak of and know of their own concept of a “god-figure” and each is completely unique and at the disposal of the holder – like puppeteers, we are keepers of our “gods.” Isn’t it true that each person who believes in “a god” seems to have the uncanny ability to make his “god” be whatever he wants it to be.

Consider this: When one says: “God wants…” isn’t he actually saying “MY god wants…”? …and in so saying, didn’t the speaker, the puppeteer-keeper of “god,” impose his own desire upon his personal “god”?

Your thoughts, please.

Parents? Friends / peers? How many of you thoroughly researched all the various religions before choosing your form of worship, and how many of you just accepted it because you were raised to do so? What was it about your faith that made you choose it?

By what I see, most answers come from them (90%) and very few from other religions.
I asked a couple questions to Catholics and have only a couple answers from them.
I asked a couple general questions about Jesus, I received most answers and biblical quotations from LDS and other fundamentalists

that this R&S section of Yahoo answers should be changed to the Athiest vs. Christian beliefs section?

The majority of the questions I see on here are Athiests trying to stump the Christians and the Christians trying to stump the Athiests. I think that these two groups should have their own section, so that the rest of us can talk about something more interesting or serious.
