Yes, the Pope goes to confession. He has a regualr bishop who is his confessor. I have heard he goes to confession on a weekly basis.
The Pope either goes to confession behind a privacy screen or face to face as most Catholics do.
The pennance the Pope receives may be prayers or acts of charity.
When it comes to the Sacrament of Confession, the Pope is just like any other person.

Yes, the Pope is a sinner just like the rest of us. He has a confessor that he confesses to. I suppose any ordained priest could hear his confession and give him absolution though. As for darkened cubicles, sounds like you watch to many movies. That is not at all what it is like. The room is well lit, roomy, and you have the option of going face to face if you so choose. If the Pope wants the confessor to know it is him then he will choose to go face to face. What does it matter anyway if he knows the Popes sins? It is God that he is truely confessing to and God who forgives. And yes the Pope has to atone for his sins, however noone but the Pope, his confessor and God know what his atonement is.
God bless,
Stanbo

I believe, if what I've heard is correct, that the pope does go to confession, to a priest. I would say that this priest would know what the pope's sins are; but confessions are private.

He has a confessor - I don't know his name.
Most people don't sit 'in the darkened cubicle' - we go face to face.
Of the confessor is going to know what the Pope's sins are - the pope confesses them to him.
No one knows what anyone's penance is, so no one except the Pope can tell you what form of atonement he makes.

I don't know, but I would guess that since Catholic's tend to think the closest thing to God is the Pope, they probably have him confess directly to God-or maybe he doesn't need to confess, since he is the Pope??- He probably doesn't sin-LOL

Any priest (including the pope) can hear the confession of any Catholic.
No priest (including the pope) can absolve himself.
The pope needs to go to another priest to give his confession (and he knows it is the Pope).
"The priest is not a priest for himself. He does not give absolution to himself. He does not administer the sacraments to himself. He does not exist for himself, he exists for you" (Cure of Ars: Monnin II 453).
What a comfort to the guilty, when, stung with remorse and repenting of his sins, he hears the word of the priest who says to him in God's name: "I absolve thee from thy sins!" These words fall, it is true, from the lips of one who, in his turn, must needs beg the same absolution from another priest. This does not debase the merciful gift; but makes it, rather, appear greater; since beyond the weak creature is seen more clearly the hand of God through whose power is wrought this wonder. (Encyclical of Pope Pius Xi on the Catholic Priesthood) http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xi/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xi_enc_19351220_ad-catholici-sacerdotii_en.html

Jesus Christ, our High Priest forever after the order of Melchezidec.
That is who I go to also. As a child of God, we can go straight to our High Priest 24/7 & repent of anything. He is faithful & just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. John 1.
