Abu Bakr and others had begun compiling editions of Muhammad's words. Some of them were chronological, and thus, would have been more readable than Uthman's. They existed in a number of different regions, pronounced differently by the seven different dialects of Islam.

Uthman responded by having every rival version burnt and assembled a committee (which he oversaw) to compile an official Quran. What did he have to lose? What was he hiding in burning the rival copies?

I don't buy the dialect story. I read English, Old English, Latin, and Ancient Greek. They have dialects, and the meaning doesn't change in them. This seems to be a cover-story. In fact, it makes sense for me of the nonsensical order of the Quran; it makes it rather difficult to read, which would be good for an alteration not to be detected.

Can anyone offer any logical reason to me not to believe Uthman corrupted the Quran? At least Christians can examine variants in ours. They weren't conveniently burnt by an emperor.

What is the Christian church's position on obesity in America? Is it reciprocity for sin (gluttony/sloth/corrupt commercial conglomerates)? I have an ignorant friend who believes that the AIDS pandemic is direct judgement from God for stereotyped promiscuity in the gay community. Do Christians believe the same for obesity?

but on another planet?
I am not saying that anyone is wrong or right but sometimes I get answers and I really can not comprehend them. And that not because of any writing flaws (usually I can make out even the worse grammar).
When I say comprehend I mean I can not understand what they are thinking...I can not grasp it. Its neat in one way but in another I feel like I am beating my head against the wall. (Not to convince but rather to understand)
Ever feel that way?

It's for a school project and I need more opinions. This man pretended to be a preacher and did wonderful things for the people, but in reality all he doesn't believe in God. All he's ever really wanted to do was to yell out his secret, and die so he no longer had to suffer having that secret. There a quoate that simbolized that he denied Christ.

I was wondering if .... because of society's condemnation of gays that .... gays would be attracted to a vocation ... such as the Priesthood ..... because it would allow these men to hide their disinterest in women ?

If you say there is no Absolute Truth you are making an absolute statement. In other words, you are saying "there are no absolutes" is absolute truth.

If a person identifying as a homosexual never "acts" on the temptation (ie: intercourse, fantasizing), however enters into a loving and intimate bond with another of the same sex which remains sexually unphysical..is that considered a sinful act?

Why is it that atheists have a problem with people of faith? It is like an obsession or rebellion.

I think one of my most difficult aspects with belief in god is a nontion that I must have faith. I have a poor concept/grasp of faith.
So I tried an experiment. I had this thought that no matter how ugly people are to each other here, people are still people and see each other as fellow human beings first and foremost. I tested this theory...with the following question.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aryp6a2bWSrkczae1Ta5itLsy6IX?qid=20070430065512AAGTD8O
For the most part I got some positive answers that seemed to help my theory.
Yet I still question my own theory. I once had faith in humanity and never would have asked this question. But now I question and doubt my faith in humanity. So here is my question if I doubt something on a such a small scale how is it one finds faith in such a grand scheme as God?
And I am not depressed or anything..it just seems complicated.

My parents are both catholics. I was baptized as a catholic too. I never really went to church and I don't practice the religion. I don't really believe in Catholicism because i disagree with many things catholics believe in. I do believe in God i just don't have a specific religion. Even if i was baptized as a catholic but i don't agree with the religion should i consider myself a catholic?

Well for those who have , I am about to blow that theory out of the water. That argument is not valid because not all countries have Social Security. In fact the US is the only one.

She has great questions for me, for which I attempt to research. But, i always feel that my answers aren't enough for her to understand the "why" in me being Catholic. She is a huge Bible buff, believes she is "Right." What can I do to help counter her opinions...its for some reason I feel in my gut that the Catholic faith is rooted in truth rather than opinion, and I'm not sure how to convey that to her. Any other help I would appriciate, especially any questions I should ask her, so that she has to defend herself as she makes me defend myself.

(please no "you shouldn't fight" responces. We are not looking for compromise, we are looking for a way to demolish the hurdle of us starting a life together.)

I need some real Catholic help here - my adreniline is pumping in hopes of helping her see the way, she is inteligent, but I believe she only has believed in what she was taught by her parents. - I became catholic, drawn to it, but she isn't drawn to it for the same reasons.
