Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.
People die all the time with venial sins on their conscience and they will go to heaven.
With love in Christ.

"Mortal sin" is called mortal because it is the "spiritual" death of the soul and "Venial sins" are slight sins. Venial sins is the invention of the Roman Catholic (1648-1713).
Catechism says, that venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity and consequently eternal happiness. These concepts present an unbiblical picture of how God views sin. Man adding words again.
The Bible states that God will be just and fair in His punishment of sin and that on the day of judgment some sin will merit greater punishment than others (Matthew 11:22, 24; Luke 10:12, 14).
Biblical teaching on distinction of sins.
In Numbers 15:22-31. Here you read about the appropriate offerings to be made for those who ‘sin unintentionally’ on the one hand, and those who ‘sin defiantly’ on the other.

In summary, mortal sin is an intentional violation of the Ten Commandments (in thought, word or deed) committed in full knowledge of the gravity of the matter and it results in the loss of salvation. Salvation may be regained through repentance and God’s forgiveness. Venial sin may be a violation of the Ten Commandments or a sin of a lesser nature, but it is committed unintentionally and/or without full consent. Although damaging to one’s relationship with God, venial sin does not result in loss of eternal life.

Basically one is the first is a major sin and the second is a minor sin - both sin, but the first one would seriously hinder your communion with God - perhaps even going to heaven. Examples: Mortal Sin: Murder - Venial Sin: Swearing

The Catholic church teaches that mortal sin is one so serious that it separates the soul from God, and if it is not confessed and absolved, it may lead to the soul's damnation. For example, murder is a mortal sin. Those in a state of mortal sin should not take Holy Communion.
A venial sin is still sin, but it does not destroy grace in one's soul. It still must be confessed and absolved, but it doesn't prevent the person from taking Communion.

Venial sins are minor sins. Although it injures our relationship with God, it does not destroy it.
Mortal sins cut us off from the grace of God. In order for a sin to be mortal, it has to be of grave matter, one must fully consent to it, and one must have full knowledge of it. The sacrament of reconciliation serves to restore us to a state of grace after committing a mortal sin.

according to roman catholic doctrine Mortaal sin is very heavy sin and venial sin is less sin.
Heavy sin are killing, murder, rape, etc
Venial sin are stealing, lies, saying bad words, desobeying your elders etc.
However, there is no such thing as moral and venial sin in the eyes of GOD. All of then are the same.

Mortal sin /venial sin = Catholic doctrines not bibicaly based.
but made up by man.
Sin is sin .all sin separates us from God. without the saving grace of the lord Jesus through his sacrifice on the cross, we are destined to hell and eternal punishment.
through belief in Jesus ,confession of our sins and continued growth through the indwelling of the holy spirit which comes at the time of our salvation we overcome sin.
stay away from Mans doctrines and stick to the bible.(Study to show yourself approved.)

there is a saying..."a sin is a sin is a sin".....but some sins are more gross than others...if you fib to get out of hurting someones feelings it is not as serious as murder..... although when God gave the 10 commandments all the 10 were on an even par....I am glad I don't have to judge...Only God will let you know how he feels about it when the time comes.

Sin is rebellinon against God. Certainly murder,
adultery, theft, bearing false witness against someone is far far more serious than idle gossip,
being unnecessarily irritable with your fellow man etc.
I agree that stealing 3 apples is not as serious as murder but it is theft and children should be trained that it is a mortal sin.
