FIRST- I don't want to offend and I don't want anyone to write anything inflammatory in response to my question.

QUESTION-
I recently went to a Protestant Non-Denomenational church with a friend of mine. I'm not a Christian, but I've read about the religion and read some of the Bible. Anyway, I realized during the sermon that the people in this particular church believe that hell is a real physical place with real physical tortures that a person suffers for all of eternity.

I always thought that hell was more metaphorical in the Christian faith- like living in the darkness of not having knowledge of self and God and love. But now it turns out that these people believe it to be a real place.

How common is that amoung Christians nowadays (not in the past)? How many of you believe in a literal heaven/hell and how many believe it is more interpretative or metaphorical?

Also, what is heaven like? Do you think that you will keep your own personality or merge with God?

I'm always confused as to why when I or anyone else for that matter asks a question about Christianity that I receive biblical quotes rather than a direct, personal answer. Why do you feel the need to quote scripture when I'd really rather hear from you, yourself? I find it much more personal and interesting. Namaste!

I believe this is true. There isn't much unconditional love going on in this world and sometimes I get the feelings many Christians believe because of their knowledge of the negative like hell and eternal damnation versus just being a disciple of Christ because you just really want that. I have been threatened with the usual you don't want to go to hell thing and i think that religion and protecting your beliefs are very important things so to have to give someone an ultimatum is not the right thing to do.When people bring that up it seems like a strength in numbers thing versus doing Gods bidding which is recruiting true believers not threatening people and making them feel like **** so you can feel you've done good in the eyes of God.

subbhan Allah !! surely God has said in the Quran what it means:

"We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur'ân) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things? "fussilat 41:53

Do you give a tithe (10 percent of your time which would be 2.4 hours of your day) to God's work? Is this required of all good people to live a Godly life?

I'll try not to bash it is not my intent I am just curious.
From what I've heard I have to be saved to go to heaven, but what about the people that have never heard of Christ, are they doomed to hell? I know in this day and age most people have been discovered, but what about the ones who haven't been?

And how do the Natives feel about it once the missionarys have opened their minds, Knowing they can be saved but never getting to see thier ancestirs in the after life because they were not saved! How does that work?

...still religiously unsure, or is it just me?

I feel that I have to give it a little more thinking, before I decide what I choose to believe

(or before something "strikes" me with absolute belief or absolute unbelief, if this sort of things ever happens).

Whatever it is, it should have to be, however, coherent with science and logic.

Or, maybe I'll take it easy and settle as an atheist.

What about you?

Than use a Bible translation that took God's name out, wouldn't you? We all know that this is a fact. Why do you continue to support a translation that took our Heavenly Fathers name out? I respect the commitee that translated the New World Translation and thank them for restoring Jehovah's name.

Noticed I said OUR FATHER. Jehovah is God Almighty who created us all.
The personal name of the only true God. His own self-designation. Jehovah is the Creator and, rightfully, the Sovereign Ruler of the universe. “Jehovah” is translated from the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, הוהי, which means “He Causes to Become.” These four Hebrew letters are represented in many languages by the letters JHVH or YHWH.
The Jerusalem Bible: The Tetragrammaton is translated Yahweh, starting with its first occurrence, at Genesis 2:4.
So if it is Yahweh or Jehovah why take it out and replace it with a title such as Lord? What are your thoughts?

How can man keep his whole body in check (James 3:2 NIV) -- beat his body to make it his slave (1 Cor 9:27 NIV) -- put to death all his earthly nature (Col 3:5 NIV) -- and "...take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Cor 10:5 NIV) ???

From the perspective of the people of the Nations, these biblical statements embody rigid extremism in its ultimate form. Yet, these verses of scripture represent core spiritual concepts!

Is the original New Covenant teachings the embodiment of such extremism, as our liberal thinkers would reason today?
