If your answer is no, how come so many supposed Muslims are killing for the sake of Islam? Do I have it all wrong?

I'm simply trying to understand, not provoke or offend.

Islam allows violence only when Muslims are attacked first. In any other situation, it is completely against what Islam means and stands for.

For those of you who are laughing at me... That is the truth about Islam. Unfortunately there are people out there who distort the Qur'an and use their misinterpretations to defend their attacks on innocent people. Suicide bombers and terrorists are not true Muslims because their actions are not permitted in Islam. If they practiced their religion as it was meant to be practiced, they would never commit these atrocities. I live in a Muslim country, surrounded by thousands of pious Muslims. They are not bad people, they love Allah and they treat people kindly and with respect. I am comfortable living here and never fear for my safety.

Islam is intolerant to violence without just cause, hence Jihad (equivalent to a crusade). Those Muslims who kill for the "sake of Islam" have a personal grudge either because of politics or difference in religion and they have twisted the words of the Qu'ran to support their acts which they feel guilty about. Not all Muslims are out there killing people but only the ones who have been brainwashed to hate and have been manipulated by their nation and leaders. Are you saying that 25% of the world's population is killing in the name of Islam? That's a big accusation.

Jihadists today invoke the Quran to justify the worst terrorist crimes. Throat slitting of infidels is mentioned in the Quran. Al-Mawardi (d. 1058), the prominent 11th century jurist quoted this verse, specifically, « When you encounter those who deny (the Truth) then strike (their) necks. » (Quran 47 :4), in his learned discussion of jihad. This ritual execution is also mentioned in other Muslim legal texts and in narratives of Christian and prominent Muslim historians. Today it is performed against infidels and recorded on videotape for the edification of Muslim audiences.

When the average pious Muslim reads a verse like 2:132 (“And this was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons, and so did Jacob; ‘Oh my sons! Allah hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the Faith of Islam’”) or 3:67 (“Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah’ (which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah”), he understands what so many imams tell him: that the true Jews and Christians of today are the Muslims, and the people who go by those names are renegades and rebels against God.

This is of course nonsense.

Does it matter to you that there are communities where you live that would prefer to see you subdued and regarded as a second-class citizen just because you don't believe that mohammed was a prophet and that he was receiving revelations from a divine being. Even worse, they might prefer that you were 'silenced' for saying anything that could be construed by that community that you do not believe mohammed was a prophet. Finally, that you be killed if you ridiculed his so-called 'message'. Any other questions ? John

No Islam does not promote violence. The Sunni and Shia who are busy killing each other in Iraq are doing that because of political reasons. By that I mean that Shia think that they have the right to go kil the Sunni since the Sunni were treated better then the Shia under Saddam. The Shia also think that Ali was supposed to be the next caliph after the Prophet's(PBUH*) death where normal Muslims(non sect) and Sunni know it was his father in law and close companion Abu Bakr(May ALLAH have mercy on him) who was to rule Arabia after the Prophet's(PBUH*) death. As for the Muslims in Palestine they are fighting each other because the one group says they should go fight all the Jews in Palestine and the other half is saying we need to get along with them. The reason there are so many martyrs in Palestine is because the Palestinians are being oppressed by the Zionists and being falsely occupied. Do you know what happens to the Palestinians? The Israelites use them as human Shields and cut out the women's eyes. There's a bunch of women and men from Palestine in jail right now because they are Muslim. We Muslims are not allowed to enter our mosque in Jerusalem. We are only allowed to fight in the cause of Islam. By that I mean the men fight. And the men are allowed to fight only if they are oppressed like the Palestinians, or the state of Islam or the people are threatened. That's the only way we can fight.

If self-defense is violent then yes. Otherwise no. Never. If that were the case you would see ALOT more killing. Allah has ordained us to respect all tribes of people and not judge people by the color of their skin or their gender; only their piety. Anyone who believes in God and the last day and tries to be good will have their reward.

Ture Muslims are meditative, calm, humble, smile, and do countless acts of charity (discreetly). They are the ones most often overlooked. May God bless their hearts. I could NEVER kill a person and would only *consider* it in the event that I was in a *just* war(thats rare, if not non-existant in today's circumstances). Otherwise I do not even eat meat (only fish) and I do not squish bugs. All of God's beautiful creation are here for a reason. I don't impose punishment; I speak God's word and that's where my deed ends. To your way and to me mine :]

Peace.

The problem is that you are not recognizing there are different types of Muslims across the world. Because of this, readings and teachings out of the Koran can be interpreted in different ways for different groups.

You can see the same type of issues in Christianity. There are many different kinds of Christians - and these Christians believe in the same Bible but often times interpret versus and scriptures differently. Many, many wars have been fought over this.

Whether you are Christian, Muslim or Jew - there are different sects of your religion and you cannot classify each into one large lump sump.

I'm not a Muslim, but I have done extensive research and know several Christian missionaries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Islam is not a religion of peace, as many (unfortunately including our own Christian President) would have you believe. There are certainly peaceful Muslims, including most Muslims in the U.S., but a large number overseas believe as I have seen others post, there are 3 choices for "infidels", or non-believers of Islam----convert to Islam, second class citizenship with severe consequences in the society, or death.
