it is accepted today (single mothers, artificial insemination...). Doesnt it make christianity look like a sort of "product" that has to adjust to whatever new purchasers may need and want?

Suppose we put him inside a really thick, steel reinforced concrete bunker, and then run huge, pipes around it filled with water. You know he's going to start doing that hellfire stuff soon enough, and viola, steam to turn generators to make electricity!

Then again, as soon as I patent the idea, big oil will probably bury it.

We all know that children aren't born knowing right from wrong straight away, but rather we develop a conscience over the years.

This makes perfect sense if you accept our evolutionary origins - there is no evolutionary advantage to being unselfish and considerate as a very young child, you are helpless and you just need to get fed and protected and survive even if your siblings perish. However, when we're adults and we have to look after ourselves, there are huge survival advantages in being caring and co-operative with each other, so any genes which promote this trait will tend to proliferate in a population.

If we were really products of a god, who made us with a moral sense, then it would seem reasonable to expect that very young children would be the most moral individuals, since they would be closest to the unsullied design of said deity.

That's why I think religion has a big problem explaining morality compared to how well it's accounted for by evolution.

Agreed?

"Because Muslims were fighting for their lives back when the quran was written!"

Ok, so then we agree the Quran was written by fighters and not "God".

"no! it was written by Allah of course!!!"

I'm confused now. Allah wasn't in the middle of all these wars and battles was he? Allah didn't have to "defend" himself, so he was free to write whatever he wanted, in fact, while Muhammad was busy slaying all domestic non-muslims, allah could have given Quran verses about the coming of the internet or anything he wanted.

Muhammads battles didn't create any NECESSITY on the part of allah right? So the argument that all the violence in the quran was written out of the necessity of the times is crazy.

If the Quran really was a timeless book written directly by God, then we should expect flawless penmanship absent the influences of the current times.

At least the clergy of another false religion (xianty) were smart enough to address this issue by making sure their book of god (bible) had a claim of "inspired by God THROUGH man".

If you claim that your book is DIRECTLY from God, we must use the highest standard of critical review. The claim that "all the murder and hate language of the quran merely mirrored the times" won't cut it because Gods direct word couldn't be constrained by any times.

Islam is the height of stupidity. Read the Quran for yourself and see.

I went to church all my life every Sunday and Wednesday and have finally realized how ridiculous the idea is. Yes, I believe that Jesus was a good man of his time but nothing more than that. There has been so much of the "Bible" destroyed to make a single concept to control the people so why does everyone believe it if it's not even all there. I believe that the Bible is nothing more than a set of good ideas for people to follow by to control the people. Could anyone give me any more evidence without using the word bible or faith? Thanks.

I was searching for what he had been doing with the money besides getting rich himself and he had these huge mansions and cars and jets. Why doesn't he give to the poor until it hurts? Also, if we are giving to him and he isn't poor how is that giving to the poor? I don't understand?

If the pilot is a Christian, the co-pilot is not to be a Christian, (or the other way around) because if the rapture takes place, there won't be anyone to fly the plane!

It is between Andrew Sullivan (author of "The Conservative Soul") and Sam Harris (Author of "The End of Faith")... both good writers.

It is in two parts and here are both of the links:

On the first link there are six pages. So this will take you some time to read (I think about 45 minuets - but I promise it is worth it).

I have been following this debate so I would love to here some feedback/thoughts.

Turning violent in your thoughts against me?

Think for a while. Celebration Days are days of violence! Christmas we celebrate because of the birth of Jesus Christ who put some sanity in a sinking immoral world. Easter Sunday we celebrate because we are happy on His resurrection. These are the two celebration days that stand first when we take into account the billions of mute lives that are slaughtered. If mankind can observe a 'Good Friday' why can't the spared mute lives observe a 'Good Sunday"? If you believe that they were created for mankind why then they cry in pain when either tortured or slaughtered? We have a conscience of convenience that answer many a question that violate it! You can condemn me and brand me ‘heretical’ for this question. But before doing that think for a while and justify our actions and attitude on this issue. Pinch a little hard on your body! Does it not pain you? Did I hurt your sentiments? Please pardon me because it was far from my objective.

Why do people believe in a so called "rapture" when the Bible says at Rev. 7:14 "So right away I said to him: “My lord, you are the one that knows.” And he said to me: “These are the ones that come out of the great tribulation..."
You have to be in something to "come out" of something. Noah and his family were not raptured off of this earth during the flood- God gave them instructions how to survive it.

The resurrection of Jesus is the cardinal affirmation of Christian faith found in the New Testament and passed on to us by early Christians. To confess, "Jesus is Lord," one has to accept that "God raised him from the dead" (Romans 10, 9) and that "if Christ has not been raised, then is pour preaching in vain and your faith is vain too" (1 Corinthians 15,14). Not to admit the resurrection of Jesus means that one is not a Christian.

There are six different resurrection narratives in the New Testament (Mark 16,1-8; Matthew 28,1-20; Luke 24, 1-53; John 20,1-29; the Johannine appendix, 21,1-23 and the appendix to the Marcan gospel 16,19-20). They are all the same in many ways except for the accounts of the empty tomb. It should be noted that Paul makes no mention of an empty tomb in his letters (1 Corinthians 15,3-5) Hence, the story of an empty tomb might seem to be of later (apologetic) origin. So the big question is, what was the resurrection of Jesus like? Was it resuscitation or a reanimation? Luke 24, 37-39 seems to reject the idea that he was like a spook.
