Christians say that God is the creator, and atheists ask "then who created God?" We say God is preexistant and had no creator, and we're mocked as idiots. Then we get a question asking why we have to believe that everything has a creator, and it gets responses like

" It's a simplistic, anthropomorphic view of reality. Intellectual laziness, if you like"

So, it seems that we're wrong for believing something could exist without a creator yet we're intellectually lazy for not believing something could exist without a creator. Perhaps I'm too intellectually lazy to understand this, but it seems contradictory. Anyone care to enlighten me?

If most religions teach peace love and good moral principles,
Why is there so much nastiness here?

Is there really that much to fear from someone with a differnt opinion?

( I got a hate mail last night calling me something like the ignorant pig span of a born again hypocrite .. and that was just the subject line)

Why is it so many people don't mind offending GOD and Christians at every interval, yet if you disagree with people who do wrong according to GOD's word you are called a bigot or in-tolerant?

Are we now living in a world that convey's a message..
Anything goes if it's not *physically* hurting anyone and people should just shut up or they will be branded as bigots and in-tolerants, this is the world the majority wants?

But over the years, I have studied the different theories from biblical verses and i found that i cannot believe in the raptures as the "left behind" books say it has to be.
I believe that Enoch was a good example and Elijah too. They were Risen and ascended and translated from mortality into a different state of existence. Most christian are trained to believe that 1thess. ch 4 describes that all believers will be taken away from the tribulation which is still to come. But they believe that planes will fall from the sky and cause death and destruction or that people in cars will be taken and the driverless cars will cause a lot of Havoc and even more death.

being changed in a twinkling of an eye doesnt necessarily happen to everyone all at the same time. and there is no proof that it will happen before, the tribulation or even during the tribulation or after it. It will happen! dont get me wrong. It has already happened with the firstfruits and the beginning of the resurrection.

If you read Charles Darwin's biography it is stated that he cleary believed in a higher power. So why if the man that came up with the theory of evolution believed in a higher power would people use his theory to support a beleif in no god? I would think that this would support an agnostic belief more than an atheist belief. I am a Christian myself but I would like to know how people think and I beleive that it is our responsibility to educate ourselves ( in a respectful manner- please ) on each others differences.

Is there something atheists have to offer theists? Is there a moral obligation for atheists to spread what they believe is true?

As they have all been brainwashed into an irrational belief (which actually trades on it's irrationality - see all "faith vs proof" answers I'll get) and you can't have a logical debate as there is nothing logical about what they believe or think...

Not in an evil satanic sort of way, just in an honest, realistic sort of way, because I've been through some bad things in my life (social issues and mental syndromes/illnesses) and I am kind of dark. Not in a depressed "all-hope-is-lost" sorta way, actually I'm usually happy and playful, but I find even when I'm happy I can write some pretty dark things, mostly poetry. I'm very faithful and spiritual, I tend to focus on Jehovah, Jesus, and theology a lot. But due to my past I have the capacity for darkness, not in a way like I'm stuck in the past though, because like I said I'm normally happy. But sometimes I find myself depressed, mainly about love (the lack thereof) and my poor relationship with my mother driving a desire for someone else's love.

A simple question for the R&S folks.

This question has been inspired by the following answers:

"we are not animals"
"I'm not an animal. Speak for yourself."
"We are not animals----we are humans and are supposed to be above animal behavior."

"Dune" the movie. It's on in the background right now and I don't remember it being this godawful! Did anyone ever think it was any good and if so, why? Would you like to rant about its awfulness instead? Please!

A very religious man lived right next door to an atheist. The religious man prayed every single day and night, spending much time at church, while the atheist never even thought of such acts.
However, the atheist's had a good life. An excellent, well-payed job, and a beautiful wife, lovely, healthy, children, whereas the religious man's job was stressful and his wages were low, his wife was getting fatter every day ,and his kids were obnoxious, and non loving.

So one day, while deep into his regular prayer, he looked towards heaven and asked, "Oh God, I honour you every day, I ask your advice for every problem and confess to you my every sin. Yet my neighbour, who doesn't even believe in you and certainly never prays, seems blessed with every happiness, while I go poor and suffer many an indignity. Why is this?"

A great voice bellowed out from above, "BECAUSE HE DOESN'T BOTHER ME ALL THE TIME!"

so hung up on homosexuality ?
why do we never see people saying will angry people get to heaven ?
will lazy people ?
fat people ?
vain people ?
given that these are from the 7 deadly sins ?
why is the focus always on homosexuals when that is not a deadly sin ?

If we follow Christ's example shouldn't we instead only engage those whose hearts are open to the Spirit and the Message (Matt 13:58)?

Didn't Christ Himself speak in parables so that only those who did not "close their eyes and ears" to Him would understand (Matt 13:10-17)?

Why do you assume that everythig must have a "creator". Can't you think of any other possible ways something could have come into existence? Or is that to much brain work?

I don't quite understand that when someone makes an interesting observation (i.e. the recent question about Paul and Jesus' teachings) that many assume that the asker/answerers have not read or studied the bible. As I said, I think it is an interesting question and I've read the bible, had 17 years of Cathecism, took 3 years of Sacred Scriptures courses in University as well as Catholic Tradition classes. Why make the assumption that those of us with questions haven't actually done our 'homework'?

I am terrified to go to confession. I have never been to confession. I became a Christian and a Catholic as an adult. I took all the classes and was baptized and took communion on the same evening. Because of the adult baptism, apparently I was absolved of all my prior sins.

Well, I have sinned since then, I live with this daily on my mind. I have deep respect for the priest at my church; I cannot bring myself to tell him the sins that I am most ashamed of. I pray to God and to Jesus to forgive me. At mass every week, I have difficulty not reminding myself of these sins and I feel like a fraud.

If I do not go to confession with a priest, and I doomed to Hell? I honestly am terrified about this. It brings me to tears.

My worst sins were at a time that I was struggling with severe depression. Through my doctor, prescriptions and prayer, I feel that I am well again and wouldn't relapse to committing the same sins. This is not an excuse, rather just additional info.
