My grandfather and a bunch of my relatives on that side of the family are atheists-I would list them all but I am guessing not everyone cares about my relatives.
One of my teachers in high school was an atheists.
A couple of the people at work are also atheists.
That is where I get my ideas about atheists. Most of the people online (here and elsewhere) seem to be so far to one extreme or the other that I don't seriously consider many of them to be "mainstream atheists", if that makes sense.
From my limited experience, atheists are like most people, except they do not believe in God. Most Americans believe in God (according to polls), but don't really do anything about it. They live their life the same way. All of the atheists I know are moral people that try and do the right thing, but like all of us make mistakes and are human.
I do not like/dislike, trust/distrust them more or less because they are atheists.

Christians can't be born Christian. They must be saved from their sins, or they aren't Christian. They may be "religious," but without a heart-change, they cannot belong to Christ.
All that said to say this: I was an atheist, and so any ideas about what atheists are like, come from personal experience. Yeah, I used to be just like you.
I could tell a dirty joke at the drop of a hat, and a religious dirty joke even faster. I mocked anything to do with Christianity and the Bible.
Then God yanked the carpet out from under me, and got my attention in a big way. It is my prayer that the atheists in this forum don't wait for that to happen in their lives before choosing Christ.

It comes from fundamentalism. The black and white outlook at the world leads them to believe that anyone who is not a part of their cult are evil and mindless.
I was once a fundamentalist and used to have some interesting ideas on what an atheist was like. I am now a leftist Episcopalian and have friends of all different beliefs. Imagine, being a believer in the "god of love" for so many years but learning so late in life that we are all human. That is something I am not proud of but better late than never.

Mostly from the behavior on this site. My sons best friend since childhood told me he is an atheist (back when he was still a teen). I love this kid, he is bright and respectful, absolutely hilarious to hang out with. He's called me mom since he was a little boy. When he left for his tour over seas, I hugged him and told him I didn't care what he believed I'd be praying for him everyday and just said I love you mom.

Actually, my impression of atheists comes from R&S, and what's in the news [court cases etc.]. I really never spoke to any atheists about what/why they believe, so I'm getting my info from right here in R&S. I don't expect everyone to believe the same way I do. Each person must make their own way in life. I respect that.

Originally I got my ideas from the overt, vocal, pushy ones. The ones that stand out. Kinda freaky people.
Similar to the fact that many people get thier ideas about any religion from extremists. They are the ones that are easy to label.
But over time you meet more people and expand your understanding (if you care to) and you find the extremist arent really all that representative of any group.

Well no two people are alike. No two atheists are alike, just as no two Christians are alike. I try not to stereotype or generalize.
Although, with topic discussions so heated, this isn't a good place to try to get an idea of what any religion (or lack thereof) is like.

Us Christians believe in REAL stuff. Not all of that pish posh atheist stuff. You should ask God about it and not waste your fingers on typing. No offense, but if you really want good answers, read the book, Psalms in the Holy Bible. You want answers, God's where you turn! Blessings!!!!!! ♥

I personally try to find out about it on personal level. I do not have preconceived ideas even about Christians. We all are different.
I also see that many times people think they know what I think and what I do and believe in, just under the category : She is Christian ". They know nothing about me and what I am going through and what are my hopes and dreams, but they have me figured out. I have hardly myself figured out sometimes.
