I don't quite understand that when someone makes an interesting observation (i.e. the recent question about Paul and Jesus' teachings) that many assume that the asker/answerers have not read or studied the bible. As I said, I think it is an interesting question and I've read the bible, had 17 years of Cathecism, took 3 years of Sacred Scriptures courses in University as well as Catholic Tradition classes. Why make the assumption that those of us with questions haven't actually done our 'homework'?

LazyTime: aside from that, he made a legitimate point about Paul's teachings being very far from what Jesus actually says in the Gospels. I think that's worth thinking about in a critical way. You don't have to reject it but I do think it's interesting and something to think about.

I believe the assumption stems from the fact that many religious people are very, very set in their beliefs. If someone forces them to think about something in a different way, the brakes come on, and the person is accused of "not understanding" or "having misread it".

The majority of atheists are people who used to be Christians who took a great interest to the history of Christianity and also the composition of the Bible.

Because some questions make it very obvious that the person has never read the Bible. The person who just asked the question about Paul never meeting Jesus is a great example. If the poster had read the Bible it would have been very obvious to him that Paul did meet Jesus. This meeting was how Paul became converted.

Because they assume that if we don't believe the same way they do then we haven't read it.
