And then the person next to him or her would have their place setting on their right, and the silverware and stuff would be too close together. What's the proper etiquette here? All place settings on the right, even if the person will be inconvenienced?

I am a graduate student in my first year of study. A new graduate student was added to the program this semester and we share the same advisor as well as the same office. I have made every effort to be kind and friendly to her. In my opinion, she has interpreted my kindness for weakness and has started to talk down to me in a pretentious manner. She takes every opportunity to try and make me feel inferior and stupid. I want to be professional in the way I handle this situation but I cannot deal with her attitude anymore. Its beginning to interfere with my productivity and self esteem. What should I do?

BACKGROUND INFO- My Boyfriend & I knew each other for 10 years before I finally agreed to go out with him. It's been 6 FANTASTIC but Difficult years since then. I was previously married, He's never been, & we're not into the whole "marriage thing". Though we're very committed to "Us".
Despite the fact that we both enjoy having people come over & let us cook for them, until now, neither of us has ever had a Housewarming Party, nor the kind of friends or finances with which to host a decent one. We've since moved to Miami & have new friends.
We just moved into a new Condo-Partment. It's got everything we've ever wanted to have in a living situation. (AMAZING Amenities).
THE QESTIONS....
1. How long is "too long" to wait before having your housewarming party?
2 . While we haven't discussed gifts & assume that people will just come over, Is it Tacky to register with 1or more gift registries if the new place is just a lease & we're not married?
3. Who brings food? Who brings drinks?

My daughter (will be 5) wants to have her birthday at ice rink. We cannot afford to pay for everyone to skate. I was thinking of having party at home with games, cake, and ice cream from 6pm to 7pm (Sat.) and then going to rink afterwards (from 7:15pm to 8:15pm). We are not able to provide full transportation (only room for two more in our vehicle) or admission. What should we do? We plan on inviting 8 children (friends) and 8 adults (family and friends). (Would it be rude to let her have one or two special friends come?) What should we put on invitations?

I met this guy, and we've been dating a 2 months.

I've already met his parents several times, but he's invited me to a family dinner this weeked (his cousins are in from Europe). It's at his grandmom's house and she is doing all the cooking (appatizers thru dessert).

He insists I shouldn't bring anything, but what does ettiquette call for? I brought flowers and dessert for his mom before, but should i get something for the extended family? I don't want to insult anyone, but I don't want to look rude either! >_<

Since we get our own food and drinks, is it the customer's responsibility to pay for the people that clean the tables?

I was under the impression that buffets, pizza places, sandwich shops and other eateries where we go to the counter (or buffet line) for our own food are strictly "tip optional".

Shouldn't someone who wants to come over to your house call ahead of time to warn you that they are coming?

It was about 9:30pm on sunday and my wife's relatives just dropped in without even calling!
I told her that she needs to put them straight.
no more last minute visits, specially when you have to work the next day....

I'm sewing a skirt by hand for my young daughter and want it done by tomorrow. Also, I finished the book I was reading and haven't gone to the library yet or decided what I might read next. I don't want people to think I'm shutting them out, but at the same time, I want time alone for a while.

Everytime I go into a Wal-Mart the greeters never say anything, unless you have a return or the alarm goes off.
I would think they should at least welcome you to the store.
Hince, the title "Greeter".
Does this bother anyone else, or has common courtesy gone forever?

My dog does not like to be left alone, and I don't like to leave him alone. He is friendly. At chuch and stores I never see 'no dogs allowed' signs. At stores sometimes you see 'no shoes no shirt no service' but I don't think that applies to dogs. I don't understand why more people don't bring their pets.
