Everytime I go into a Wal-Mart the greeters never say anything, unless you have a return or the alarm goes off.
I would think they should at least welcome you to the store.
Hince, the title "Greeter".
Does this bother anyone else, or has common courtesy gone forever?

Too funny! Yes, I think thats why they are called Greeters but it does seem they are no more friendly than the rest of the employees in Wal Mart! :( They don't know crap and they are not helpful, whenever I try to find one, they are all on break??!

I've met some super (perhaps overly nice) greeters, and then some that don't seem so friendly. I think a lot of times its a person who isn't as outgoing who doesn't greet you...can you imagine having to strike up conversations with total strangers all day...and those strangers for the most part want to get away from you as quickly as possible. That's bound to make anyone a little cranky. Plus the greeter does have other (and actually more important) duties. Their primary role is Loss Prevention. They are really there to watch for shoplifters. They also are responisible for keeping the carts dry when it rains, and cleaning up any wet spots on the floor, as well as checking in any returns. So don't presume when someone isn't as friendly as they could be that they are snubbing you. chances are they just have something else on their mind.

Heyhey

Well im from Australia and used to work at Kmart, which is very similar to WalMart i assume -

Sometimes i got 3-5 hour door shifts, and you may think its easy, but standing in the one position for that long makes you a little sad haha and an extremely sore back (At 18 years of age, im 21 now) =P Especially if theres a clock in front of you, 15 minutes feels like an hour, seriously... Most of the workers would prefer getting paid for being on checkouts or floor then door greeter, it does take alot out of you... even if it doesnt seem as if it does -

I used to always greet people by a "morning =]" or a "smile"
But alot of the times i would get no response from the customers or a little twitch in their mouth saying "i heard you" -

It got to the point where i ended up only saying morning or smiling when i knew (intuition) they would be happy to say it back or give a nice smile =]

It gets hard sometimes because of so many rude customers - sometimes they make you feel terrible in so many ways!!

I wish all people who entered the store were like yourself, and actually careed when we greet them! It would have made the time go so much faster =]

Hope they greet you next time =P If not, smile at them, you'd be surprised that itll actually make there day =]

=]

To be honest, I think being a greeter at a store is a completely pointless job. Will it really change your day whether someone stands by the entrance of Wal-Mart and greets you or not? Will you LET it change your day if they fail to greet you?

I know their job is to greet people and make them feel welcome, but I think it's kind of silly to have such an employee in the first place and I think it's a bit silly too to let it bother you if they don't greet every single customer who walks in. I'm sure it gets really frustrating to have to greet people hundreds of times daily and always smile all day long. It can get incredibly repetitive and tirening.

I've had some nice ones and some that seem not to care.

My aunt is a wal-mart greeter and she greets everyone.

There are so many people coming in all the time, if they greet you then they should greet everyone else - and that will be really tiring. "Greeters" are really "watchers" - they're supposed to make sure you don't steal or smuggle things.

Actually their job is to watch people and look for strange behavior and objects that should not be brought in the store. Shop lifters and other problems are common.

I don't think any of them actually give a S.... and just stand there like an idiot.

well the ones here at my walmart just stand there maybe they acknowledge you one day but the next time they don't. I could care less what really irks me is that they have 40-50 registers and only 2 of them up and running.

It bothers me too, thats what their JOB is they are being paid to say hi to me and they wont. Half of the time they look at you and just give you that look "i really hate my job and i dont want to be here" At all of the walmarts where I live they are always like 100 years old and pissed that they have to be nice to anyone. Ok Im done ranting :)
