I'm sewing a skirt by hand for my young daughter and want it done by tomorrow. Also, I finished the book I was reading and haven't gone to the library yet or decided what I might read next. I don't want people to think I'm shutting them out, but at the same time, I want time alone for a while.

My lunch I count as a break. It's 2/3 of the 90 minutes. :-)

How about just telling them that you need some alone time and that you really want to get the skirt done by tomorrow, so you better concentrate on sewing in your break. I'm sure they'll understand if you just tell them. If you say nothing and just put your headphones on then it can come across like shutting them out, but if you briefly explain it first it's a whole different story.

Good luck with the skirt! :)

Not rude at all. It's YOUR break and you are under NO OBLIGATION to socialize on your break.

It's possible to sew & talk, but to read & talk.

If someone keeps pestering you with conversation while you try to read, THEY are the rude ones, not you.

But if you normally socialize during your breaks, you might want to take your break in a different location than usual, so you may have some privacy.

I don't think it's rude. That 90 minutes of break time is for you. I could see if you NEVER talked to your co-workers during breaks would be a little rude. But this is certainly not.

No, it wouldn't. I take a book and headphones all the time. It's my break, my time away from work. I don't want to chit chat with anyone about work.

As long as you're not working on it at your desk it shouldn't be a problem.
