I am attending a dinner this weekend for a family member who is being inducted to a Sports hall of fame...attire wasn't stipulated on the invite...it's a University function...Appetizers, dinner, and honors...? any suggestions? My date is wearing dress slacks and a white button-up (and a tie I would imagine). ...Thanks!

If your date is not wearing a suit, a jacket or a tux, then you can assume this is not a formal evening. A nice dress, not a cocktail dress, but something pretty and not revealing would be fine. A dressier suit would work as well.

For men: semi-formal means nice, classy business attire. Formal means a tuxedo. For women, semi-formal means classy business wear or a dress. Formal means an evening gown.

You don't have to wear a dress. Some wide leg trousers, strappy heels and fancy top should be ok :)

I would suggest a modest cocktail dress, not too short and probably a dark color.
