Etiquette - September 2007

We are supposed to be a polite society. People enter public places and act as if they were the only people on the face of the planet. Seriously, one (or two) small kindnesses go a long way for both the giver and the receiver.

Odd question I know but for one I don't like meat plain so will mix it with other things, and often mix mashed potatoes with other things. I like to do that, mix them together. I like the flavors and can make something not good taste good or better. I get a lot of flack at my boyfriends house about it though my parents do not seem to care, Is it no appropriate?

I been without a car for two weeks now. My friends at work have been more then nice to offer me rides in and out of work. My friend won't take money from for gas, as she gets free gas through husbands work. What should I get someone who has been generous to pick me up in the morning and checks in on me to see if I have a ride home. What should I get? Whats to much or to cheap? She said I am doing you a favor and someday return the favor. I said I am good for it. But I really would like to get her a thank you gift without it offending her. As she was mad I was trying to give her money. What do I get for someone like this?

I often wonder how other people spend Sunday. For me it is an up late and lazy kind of day. Sometimes I potter in the garden like I did today for an hour but mostly I chill out, Is it a busy day for you?

Some people can be truly disgusting, especially when they have to deal with the public. What do you think?

Not to mention the blue tooth, crackberries and other annoying toys people seem to "need" just to keep in touch. What do you think?

I am religious girl with conservative values and I am a neat freak. I made these issues crystal clear to all potential roommates when I was considering candidates for renting out my other two spare bedrooms.

I specifically spelled the following two points out:
(1) I need the common areas clutter free (I take care of cleaning) just don't leave your stuff out in common areas and
(2) I don't want men (even serious boyfriends) over as guests.
This is a high demand area and I had the right to be picky.
I spelled all of this out to my housemate before she signed a one year lease. She said it would be no problem. She would hang out with her boyfriend at his place.

I specifically said that this arrangement is not for everyone and if she had any reservations then this was not the place for her.

Now she's started to leave clutter and unwashed pots and pans on counter-tops and she had her boyfriend over, got drunk and now hes sleeping over.

I'm really upset about this. Any advice?

two of my friends are my coworkers but in a different department. They had an argument and the one who's been my friend longer than the other (before i joined this company) asked me not to talk to or be polite to the other friend who had got him the job in the first place and helped me also to get there. I tried to convince my friend to be professional and objective and not to pull me into this. I can't afford to be rude to anyone and this is their private matter, he got upset and said i've never asked you for for anything before and I'll never ask you again and he's not asnswering my calls. what should I do?

I bought 15 of them from stater brothers, that I now use everytime I go grocery shopping. I finally decided to do at least something to ease pollution so no more plastic grocery bags. Anyway is it ok for me to use my Stater Brothers' bag at say Target, or do I have to buy different bags for each store I go to? Would that be considered rude?

Someone just insulted me online and I'm *really* mad right now, I'm kind of over it, but really hurt. Can I look at things from a more positive view?

especially since my mom just pointed to a Post-It on my computer saying "Don't worry what people think; They don't do it very often."

I had told her in the beginning that my husband would kill me if he knew I was lending it out. Their lawnmower has been broke and she keeps promising me her boyfriend is supposed to be getting some extra money and she is going to make him have theirs fixed or either buy one. Well, her boyfriend called over here tonight to talk to my husband about something, but my husband wasn't here. I ended up talking to him on the phone and he told me they had went shopping (I assumed for a lawnmower). I asked what they went shopping for and he said a Recliner. He said he found a really good one for $399.00. I said "Oh well that's good" and tried to contain myself. What would you of said or done?

Every Sunday morning, while eating breakfast with me at a local restaurant, my 80 year old grandma likes to sit back, smile, and squeeze out a stinky, egg fueled fart or poop in her Depends diaper. I know she looks forward to our visits but I dont know if I can handle her "crappy" behavior much longer. What should I do?

I am going to my friend's birthday party, but it is at someone else's house, and I don't know this person. I normally go barefoot to all my friends' homes, as they know this is a habit/lifestyle choice of mine.

I've lost count on how many people interrupt me to ask a question. Our front office is maybe 20 feet from me. Go there. The book keeper will help.

I have a strange and unusual name, and I hate it when I'm at a training course or out drinking or in some social situation where I have to introduce myself, because I inevitably get the comments and questions Ive heard SO OFTEN BEFORE. It may seem excessive but I really dread it, especially when I'm speaking in front of a group. Is there anyone else with this situation, or am I being too prima donnaish? (P.S. It's not Private Erin Coolidge.)

My roommate and I got into an arguement over bills, I left the apt. for a few days to let her calm down, (I had to go to my parents anyways that weekend) & when I returned my DVD player, XBOX, movies, and some other electronics were missing. I confronted my roommate and she said that she took it because she didn't know if I was coming back or not and was making sure she had enough money to pay the rent. I asked what she did with it and she told me she pawned some it and is keeping the rest until next months rent is paid. I paid the rent for already for this month. I called the police and they said I could file a larceny complaint, but if I do that I will be out on the street until I find a new place, we a verbal agreement, the place is hers I rent a room from her, ANY SUGGESTIONS???

These people are SO intrusive. I am from the midwest where people are friendly, NOT all in your business, asking you too personal questions and they don't even know you like that.

These people are VERY nosy, they ask you (a stranger to them) very personal questions, and they are rude and whiny.

The young adults (18-30yrs) ESPECIALLY are rude and whiny.

This is very shocking to me. It seems that everyone is mad at their lives.

Please explain this phenomena. I have never seen such a pervasive array of brats in my life.

I am thinking of going to a book signing in NYC in a couple of weeks and was wondering what the etiquette is. Specifically, I would like to get him to sign a 3 copies of his new book: 1 for me, 2 as gifts for relatives of mine. Is this OK? Usual? Or is asking him to sign multiple copies gauche?

Is there a polite way to encourage my neighbors to recycle their stuff? It's the law in our town, and it saves us all tax money, because the town sells the recycled things.
These people are not especially friendly, they keep to themselves, so I rarely see them or have a chance to chat.

Any ideas on how to handle this?
