We are supposed to be a polite society. People enter public places and act as if they were the only people on the face of the planet. Seriously, one (or two) small kindnesses go a long way for both the giver and the receiver.

I agree - civilization is becoming less civil. Why, I'm not sure. I remember way back when - etiquette was taught in school, not now. Etiquette was taught at home, not now. It seems people are a lot more hard-hearted nowadays. And I suppose there are many factors that have gone into it.

Let it start with us. The more people who have good manners and etiquette will gradually get other people to see there is a place for it. We will all get along much better if we would use this.

There was a time and place where etiquette was taught at school, home and even churches. Since schools now feel that it is the job of the parents to teach etiquette, this practice is losing its valor. Today, parents have absolutely no time for the simple, though necessary patience to teach etiquette. Parents are working longer hours and possibly leaving hteir children with caregivers or relatives, etc. Therefore, raising nasty, selfish adults. I once read that if we want etiquette to be taught in the schools, parents must get involved in bringing this issue up, so that it may be petitioned to be added to curriculum. Dont lose faith though, etiquette and kindness begins one act at a time.

You bring up such an important observation. People with good manners are delightful to be around; rude, thoughtless people can be most distressing. True, many people think this does not matter...but it does.

It's simple.
People are trained to believe that manners, common courtesies, being nice, "the Golden Rule" are all derived from religion and therefore should be rejected.
The athiests have won, and the spoils of their victory are spoiled, rotten, hateful people.

I'd say because these days so many people are so selfish, and because bad behaviour nowadays largely goes unpunished.
