My roommate and I got into an arguement over bills, I left the apt. for a few days to let her calm down, (I had to go to my parents anyways that weekend) & when I returned my DVD player, XBOX, movies, and some other electronics were missing. I confronted my roommate and she said that she took it because she didn't know if I was coming back or not and was making sure she had enough money to pay the rent. I asked what she did with it and she told me she pawned some it and is keeping the rest until next months rent is paid. I paid the rent for already for this month. I called the police and they said I could file a larceny complaint, but if I do that I will be out on the street until I find a new place, we a verbal agreement, the place is hers I rent a room from her, ANY SUGGESTIONS???

To answer peeplespro, I did pay the rent on time, its next months rent she wants before its even due, I've always paid her on time, I called her just before leaving my parents house and told her I was on the way back, she never said anything about taing my stuff, plus the cops said even if I hadn't paid the rent, if I dont pay next months rent its still larceny, becuz she took things that didn't belong to her.

Move out. Press charges and take her to small claims court. I know it was a verbal contract, but she had no right to steal and sell your stuff unless she was like, one day away from being late with the rent. You're not getting along, anyway. So get out of there ASAP. Do you have a relative or friend you can crash with while you look for another place? By the way, she had to have an agreement with the apartment complex to "sublet". If she is listed as the only tenant, and the contract says she can't have anyone in the apartment without their knowledge, she broke her contract with them. If you're the vindictive type, report her. If you're not, at least you can file charges for the larceny and go to small claims court to get your things back or money to replace them. Good luck.

She has pawned your stuff, and unloaded a terrible excuse on you. Get her cornered, tell her to go get the stuff back, NOW, and you won't call the cops, and throw her her purse, and escort her to the door. If she does not return, call the cops, file the charges.
Make sure you are not alone when you do this, get a witness, so you don't get hurt.
Two guesses of why she really pawned the stuff: she is into illegal substances, or her boyfriend is, or she is a vengeful little stupid girl. Who probably needs to talk to the police.
Hocking someone's posessions = stealing.
And get out of that situation, quick, situations like that tend to escalate. Think: she stole my stuff, now what will she do the next time she is mad at me? Get out, take a hit on losing the rent, or cut her a deal with the police present, my stuff, my rent, or these nice men will arrest you. Think about getting your parents to help you.
Good luck..

Very simple. Play it cool. Stay there as long as you can without making even one comment about this issue anymore.
At this point, you should be looking for a new living arrangement. Do not tell her you are doing this.
Stay there with her until you have been there long enough to pay for the items she stole from you..... then when she asks for the rent that is due.....
Say, "Well, I would love to give you the rent, but unfortunately, the things you stole from me will cost ?$$$? to replace. So, in order to recover the cost of the items you stole, I will not be giving you a dime."
Have this ready to pull out of your purse....

Compile store ads that have each of the items she stole from you. You let her know how much you paid for those items and tell her that you will be deducting that price from the price of the rent.
She was sneaky, so turn about is fair play. Two can play her game. Just play it cool until you squat there long enough to cover the cost of your stuff.

Oh, and when she says, "I didnt get that much at the pawn shop for that stuff! You still owe me ?$$$?!"

You say..... "Well, that will teach you not to take things that dont belong to you now won't it?"

Then you should leave.

By the way, be ready to get your stuff out quickly before this gets any worse. You may just have to cut and run before you get all your moneys worth of rent.

Good luck.

Since it's her house than you should be paying her rent on time each month.. I understand that "things" happen and that maybe you have been falling short on your share or whatever but, since it's her house she basically runs the show.. If you don't like it then I would suggest you find another place or a different living arrangement.. Since you DID not tell her where you were going and if you were coming back I don't blame her for taking your things and pawning them although I wouldn't be happy about it either.. Living on your own means being an adult and paying bill on time and being responsible as well... I also suggest that you get who pays what in writing as well as the dates things need to be paid.. Also, put a lock on your bedroom door or closet whatever so, she can't get at your belongings. good luck

*Just in case you read this.. NEVER have only a verbal agreement with a living situation.. It's just asking for trouble ! If you would have had everything in writing like when bills are due/ how much and etc..This would've probably NOT happened.. I do believe you are leaving out some information that's pertinent to the whole story... Thanks everyone for the thumbs down... People who are in the wrong.. NEVER would admit the RIGHT thing to do.... DUH.....

Holy crap, what a $h!tty thing to do! I would full on go ahead with the larceny complaint - after I had the place to myself and had the chance to find my stuff that she stashed. I don't know how pawning works but maybe you can also find the coupons? Then suck it up and stay at your parents or another friend's place. What your roommate did was totally overreacting, being ridiculous, and straight theft! Wow, I'm so p!ssed for you!

Seriously, chalk it up to a lesson learned:Move out and don't look back. Keep in mind next time that the only way to really like who you live with is to live alone.
