Is there a polite way to encourage my neighbors to recycle their stuff? It's the law in our town, and it saves us all tax money, because the town sells the recycled things.
These people are not especially friendly, they keep to themselves, so I rarely see them or have a chance to chat.

Any ideas on how to handle this?

unfortunately some people get offended if you mention their recycling habits (or lack their of). They are probobly aware of the recycling opportunities, and choose (for one reason or another) not to use them. You may have to decide which is worth more to you, their friendship or opinion of you, or recycling. You could always pick through their garbage if it's really worth that much to you, but that could bring on huge problems. Perhaps you could start a neighborhood recycling program, or anonymously pass out flyers about the benifits and truths of recycling. Many people are simply misinformed about the programs.

Some people are really touchy when you point out something they are doing that you don't like. So be careful. I know how you feel, but somehow I don't think that a chat will get them to recycle.

Offer to take their things to the recycling place.
Offer to come over and get any cans they or new papers, etc to add to your recyclables.

Yes, keep your mouth SHUT. If they are breaking the law and it is such a problem to you, then report them to the proper authorities. Personally you sound mean and vindictive; you appear by this question to be a trouble maker and judgmental. Perhaps you should just mind your own business and if you still have extra time after cleaning up your own back yard, there are always charities that need labor.
