Etiquette - December 2006

[Selected]: All categories Society & Culture Etiquette

As a person who has yet to have children, but hopefully one day have some. I find that raising a polite well mannered child as soon as they are capable of understanding will go a long way to bringing up a well rounded contributing individual in today's society.

Politeness in my opinion is very important indicator of mutual respect toward one another in today's society which sadly is becoming more and more rude.

Simple basic manners such as yawning or coughing without putting one's hand over his/her mouth is becoming more and more common place.

So I pose this question to those who have children. Do you teach your children these basic etiquette rules and what would be the appropiate age to teach them to cover thier mouth when coughing, sneezing or yawning?

Or do you as a parent don't bother at all?

Thanks for listening.

Would it be Dean Smith? Associate Dean Smith? Professor Smith? Mr. Smith? Bill?

Does the context matter? If it's in a research paper? A formal letter? Email? Face-to-face conversation?

not rude of course, but just love leaving attitudes on it's nature, as if someone's staying home all alone how would he eat. drink, sit, talk in phone..... and so on

I am curious - Are there any matters of etiquette and culture that I should be aware of so that I don't offend my hosts (or anyone else?)

I've not been to India before, have traveled a bit in Europe and all over the U.S.

Also, would like to know what Indians think of Americans. Should I tell people I'm from Canada? :-)

I was invited to an engagement party that asks that you R.S.V.P. What is the proper etiquette? Do you call only if you are coming? or do you also call and tell them if you can't come?

My boss is giving his wife a birthday/christmas party with many of his clients who are "well to do". Being invited and being his employee, I am not sure what is appropriate. I had planned to wear black pants of light material and a red blouse with a fringe trim around the bottom. It is a bit dressy but has no glittz to it. I am intersted in jewlery or accessories to dress the occasion or am I out in left field with my plans.

Isn't it always "Out West" and "Back East"

Just curious

I'm folding the napkins very simply. They are just folded into rectangles to be placed under the fork on the left. Which way should the fold face? Toward the plate or away from it?

I will be attending a holiday party in a few weeks at a friends home. I was wondering if anyone could suggest any unique items that I may bring as a way to say thank you for inviting me. I know wine is customary, but i'm pretty sure that a) they already have wine in their fridge and b) people will be bringing wine to the party...so any other ideas...unusual or creative will be bonus points....thanks! PS-websites will also be helpful!

My niece is getting married and has a dilemma on how to correctly place both her Biological Father and her stepfather on the Wedding Invitation. She loves them both and wishes to place both on the invitation but just don’t know how. What suggestions can you make to help her out with this problem? Her older brother is walking her down the aisle to avoid hurting either of her Fathers but the invitation is a different problem. PLEASE Help

Good day.

One is awfully posh--not to mention frightfully well off--and one has just been pontificating with a few of ones cohorts as to what it is actually _like_ to be a member of the proletariat. At the risk of coming across as rather supercilious, would any of you plebeians care to fill one in?

Awfully grateful.

I am in a long tem relationship and would love to ask my partner to marry me. Problem is Ive been trying so hard to save up for a ring but I am struggling. We live together, plan to have kids soon and any spare cash we have is put away. I plan to buy her a ring soon as a present but not an engagement ring. Could this be used in the same way ?????
