--A bottle of wine, a couple of glasses and a fancy bottle opener (try Williams & Sonoma or Crate & Barrel)
--light-scented lotions and powders (can't miss with Crabtree & Evelyn)
--cd/dvd of 1960s-70s bands, such as The Eagles or The Stones
--Doris Day/Rock Hudson DVD collection (a hit with my 55 y/o mom)
--Gift basket with coffee mugs, coffee bean grinder (they're pretty cheap) and some whole coffee beans

Think about any hobbies this lady has and try to capitalize on it. Gardening? Music? Crafts? Sewing? Think about a color she wears a lot and get her a scarf and gloves in that color.
Good luck!

It depends on what her income is because if she is having a hard time to make ends meet a gift certificate to the grocery store is good gift that way she can get stuff food stamps won't pay for like dish soap and other non food items.
If she has a good income then a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant is nice.

I personally love gift cards (I am a little older)
I got a wallet full of assorted gift cards last year and still have one left.

Get one for a place she loves to shop or go out to eat. They are a lovely surprise. At this age you already own everything you need.

Happy Holidays.

How about a copy of your family tree. I got one for my grandmother for her birthday a few years ago, and she absolutely loved it. Another nice gift would be a newspaper from the day she was born. I'm not sure where...but I saw a sight on the net before where you can get them.

I make handmade stationery, and don't worry, I'm not here to try to sell you mine. But the people who buy my cards are overwhelmingly women between the ages of about 40 and 70. There are not that many people any more who still write notes instead of sending e-mails, but many women in that age range still do (and they really appreciate nice ones...both getting them and giving them). It's almost always a thoughtful and well-received choice. Choose a really nice stationers', and choose something that's elegant and in tune with her tastes, and maybe give her a really nice pen to go with it. You can't go wrong. :)

a nice scarf either for cold weather of as an accessory if in a warm area, a gift certificate to a fav. restaurant, movie, theater, book store etc. It depends upon what type of relationship you have with her--relative, co-worker, neighbor etc.

A mega-digest of crosswords or sudoku, perhaps?
Or nice-smelling hand-cream?
Or a movie ticket gift?
