can you wear long dresses to cocktail partys if not could you tell what is suitable

You can wear an elegant-looking dress in any color, but no formal gowns. The skirt length can be anything that you are comfortable wearing.

Yea you can, but cocktail dresses are traditionally short.

It may depend on ones gender. Worn by a guy, might raise an eyebrow or two.
