It is traditionally "out West" and "back East" because that is the way the country was settled, east to west, so to the pioneers the West was new territory and the East was "back home."
You could just say you're going to New York, or Boston, or wherever, and avoid the problem.

no longer quite I absolutely have type of an East Coast bias because Im from the East and thats the position Hip Hop change into invented. I take heed to West Coast and prefer some West Coast music yet ill consistently supply the sting to the East and picture the East has the further efficient rappers now. Being that hip hop had all began contained in the East Im slightly biased

Well, if you have never been to the east coast before, would it be correct to say you are going BACK east? Of course with out west, it really doesn't matter. You could say I am heading east cross country, but what is wrong with heading to the east coast?

I always say "back east," but I was born on the East Coast so I have the feel of returning to the past, of "going back."

"going out" to the East Coast does sound odd. But usually I would be more specific anyway and say which city/state I'm headed to.

Out west and back east. But I rarely leave the east coast so I'm not the authority.

It's "back east" left over from the days when those settling in the "new" west would refer to home back in the east. Funny, I never gave it much thought before your question.

My suggestion would be to talk as you normally do....only slower. I've learned on the far east coast, they ennounciate very well(complete words). The further southeast, however the language breaks. I've gone from Wash. D.C to Alabama to Oklahoma. Its actually fun to learn the differences......Slow it down "west coast"!!
