Just to make conversation, is it ok to ask how much someone makes, even if it's not the same job you're doing?

I realize text/instant messaging is all the rage, but there's a lot to be said for proper grammar, spelling and appropriate use of the english language.

While dining out the other day, the waiter was very friendly and called the women at the table sweetie, doll, and other such congenial nicknames. Two of the women were offended and asked to be called ma'am.

Personally, unless we are at a very formal restaurant, I think ma'am is for old ladies. I much prefer a flirtier nickname like sweetie.

How do you feel about this? Is being called sweetie at a casual restaurant disrespectful?

So in about a week or so, I have to go back to high school. I go to a really nice wealthy high school, its just that the drama is unbelievable! i mean, WHO CARES if barbie broke up with brad blah blah blah. i mean does it really matter? i never understood why some people enjoy talking rudely about other people, or why they care whats going on in someone elses personal life.

So, my question is, who else here hates drama, not just high school drama, but drama in general? How do you deal with it?

Whenever I buy something like new shoes or a purse, or even get my hair done I get asked that by a certain co-worker, I usually just say I paid what it cost, or why do you need to know that? I don't want to be rude or anything I just do not like discussing money or what I spend.

Most women don't seem to have this problem. My saliva is just fine, even if I have a cold, etc.

i would say yes... due to the terrorist bomings and the influx of immagrants into the uk. i will say that some not all immagrants come here for a better life as i would not blame them if i came from a country like iraq or eastern europe. but we must all ask ourselfs is it that we feel that we as a nation dont welcome people to the uk. we tend to have this barrier that we put up is it because we live on an island or that we have never lost a war. i state that sombody said mr enoch powel was right but you have to disagree with that as in the 50s and 60s the uk asked these people to come to work here as a type of cheep labour and they would do almost any type of job. i think we all have to acept that the uk is a very multicultural society and we just have to get on with life and each other and try to break down the barriers of cultural divide. im sur alot of countrys in europe think the same. so the statement im making is this....IM NOT RACIST BUT IM PROUD OF MY NATIONALITY.

Nowadays people say “hell,” “damn,” and much, much worse in everyday conversation and even around youngsters as if it is nothing. Now, I am not going to sit here and act as if I am a saint, but I know how to control my profanity. I know when it is just my friends and me or inappropriate to use. Most do not though.
So do you think it has gone too far?

For me it is people who can't form a coherant question or answer. I understand that spelling and proper grammar may not be everyones thing. But if you're going to ask a question, don't you think it would be nice if people actually understood what you were asking? As for spelling, there's no excuse, there's a spell checker right there. Yahoo gives more than enough characters to form a complete thought without reverting to leaving words out.

I've known of people who have written this on invitations and other announcements, and they honestly want nothing except the presence of their guests.

But it seems nowadays, that people think that by putting "No gifts, please" that their request actually means "but we'll accept your cash, check, money order, visa..."

Am I the only one who believes that "No gifts" means "No gifts"? Isn't money a gift? Why don't these picky people just have a yard sale to liquidate what they would get from all of the gifts that would have been thoughtfully chosen for one reason or another?
