i see no reason that you would have to serve food at 2:00 they should all eat lunch if your worried about it go out a buy a few bags of chips and like snake foods so they can munch and everything should be fine

Cake and ice cream is plenty. Be part of the movement that STOPS ridiculously expensive children's birthday parties. Also, unless this is a party just for members of your family, insist upon NO GIFTS...or you will be in a contest to one-up every other mother in the neighborhood for the rest of your child's life.
My kids are now 6 and 3 and they always prefer cake, ice cream and presents with Mom and Dad to a big huge party with a million people they don't know and a bunch of gifts they don't want.

You don't need to have a full spread, but you might want to have some other, healthier-type munchies around. Maybe a veggie tray or some cheese and crackers. Just something to nosh on while the party is going on. Of course, that would mainly be for the adults as the kids will be too busy running around to worry about anything BUT cake and ice cream.

NO you dont. I do the same thing. I usually put on the invitation "come join us for cake and ice cream". I dont know were people got the idea that they always have to be fed. I actually have a friend that has a bday party every year for her kid and expects us all to bring a dish to pass. As if were not already bring a gift now we have to feed everyone else.

Something to drink would be nice. Go get those cans of juice from the store - get the generic really cheap kind and a few generic white sodas and a can or two of fruit...make a punch they are great for cake - it won't cost much at all.

I know I'll be in for it for being too blunt, and most women will disagree, but having a birthday for a kid this young invites the kind of social drama you describe. This all about the mom...not the child. At six years old, they might better understand what's going on, and appreciate it. Maybe. But my suggestion, aside from cynicism, is to avoid the problem by being blunt yourself: tell everyone before hand what to expect.

no I would just stick with the cake and ice cream. It's not like the party is at noon or something. 2:00 is a good time.

A two year old's party calls for cake and juice boxes. The ice cream is a bonus. But you do need something to drink.

No. Maybe some chips and soda, but everybody understands that you scheduled it for 2:00 because there's not going to be a meal involved.
