Is there something inherently awful about men's saliva that makes it necessary for them to spit it out?

Most women don't seem to have this problem. My saliva is just fine, even if I have a cold, etc.

I've wondered this same thing, and when I ask my husband why he spits, all I get is, "I dunno." Do men salivate more than women? Do their sinuses get congested more often, forcing them to cough up phlegm and spit it out? It really is a disgusting habit, and one that seems very unnecessary. I get sick of walking down the sidewalk or the parking lot and having to step around piles of saliva and phlegm that men spit. It's disgusting.

I think you're onto something...

I just love it when my husband and I are walking home from the train at 2am after a night out, and he decides to do this awful, incredibly loud thing where he clears his throat, and then spits it out rather violently. Just the thing people want to hear outside their windows in the middle of the night. Next time I'll tell him - if it really tastes so bad that you can't swallow it, it probably also tastes too bad for me to kiss you. What a shame. :-) Think that'll help?

no. u get extra spit in ur mouth and then ya spit it out. it became a habbit ever since chewing tobaco was invented. since mostly only men chew its just thought that only men would spit out. but tht aint true. i do it sometimes too.

that's an awesome question that i've wondered about for years. i don't think it's because it tastes bad, i think men spit it out as they for some weird reason in their messed up heads think that it looks cool or makes them feel cool to do it.

Ha ha, my little brother always does that, especially if other guys are around. he'll get this really togh look on his face, pucker up his mouth, and spit. it's so gross, but he thinks he's really cool when he does it. it's the same way that boys always lower their voices and say things like "dude" and "yeah man" whenever other guys are around.
