when I promptly returned it they berated me for not emptying the tray at the bottom, should I just have punched her?

No, you should have beat her to death with it. Then emptied it over her body.

Although emptying the tray would have been a nice gesture, there was no need for her to be like that. Hey at least you returned their hole punch, thats all that matters right?!

Had the same problem myself. The next time she was out of the office I emptied the hole punch into her umbrella. I wasn't there to witness the results unfortunately, but I think she got the point

If you half filled the tray, then it would have been a nice gesture for you to empty it.
It was not professional of her to berate you for such a minor inconsideration.
YOU shouldn't be worried about the incident "several years later."

Depends how much you filled it up, and how much they berrated you.
If you filled it to the point where it was unusable, it might have been a nice gesture.
But even if you did, and they commented on it in a nasty way, you should have killed her, all her extended family and business colleagues (including yourself). Just like Kaiser Soze (I have no idea how to spell that, but it was quite a good film).

Definitely! How out of order is that? It's not like you used her stapler to staple pictures of her head to David Hasslehoffs' body. Some people need to get a sense of perspective mate.
