In the 1950's Blacks had no rights and couldn't vote in the South. In the North they lived in the worse ghettoes in America under a police state. Women can only be nurses in the military and had very few job options. They were mostly house wives, and few were let into college. Also Sexual assualt and Domestic abuse was unheard of then. Gay and lesbians had to remain hidden because of fear. And lastly they told school children to hide under their desk in case of a nuclear attack! The 1950's sound like a get time!

IBeing a new athiest who has converted from from that fairy tale about a big boat and a flood or some **** (christianity) I'm wondering, where can I learn more?

Do we have like our own Athiest oriented websites?

It really rocks being athiest.

I love it.

the first few days i felt like i was going to go to hell when i died.

but it just were off.

like i guess its where i was conditioin to believ for so long.

like how you know in your heart santa is real even though the other kids are more mature and make fun of you for it. but when you find out he really dosnt, your not that brave soldier who stood up for santa, your just the only 6th grader who was that stupid.

and you dont belive hes fake even after you find out.

it troubles you and you still feel like he's real and you can feel him.
but then it wears off.

and you accept it

and never think back.


grow up christians, don't be the kid defending santa.

So I've been racking my brain trying to think of what to get my Mother for her 50th. I mean, it has to be really special. I got her a Mother's ring with all of her kids birthstones for Mother's day so jewelery is out. I'm not terribly rich but can get her something decent. So, I'm throwing her a surprise party, which should be enough, but I want something for her to remember the day. So, what do you think about me taking her and my daughter - her only grand child, (and I'm her only daughter) to have our portrait taken together professionally?

Do you think it's special enough? If not, ANY IDEAS?!

Hello, I just recently found out that my girlfriend posted all these super personal problems of ours... right here, on Y! answers she even lied a little bit to make me seem all the more evil.

in America to counter the hardcore religious right regarding the issues that most atheists and agnostics feel strongly abou? It seems that a great deal of Christians actually are pro-choice. They believe in evolution. They advocate the separation of church and state. They support stem-cell research. They support gay rights.

Why don't they speak up about the nutbag evangelicals? How can we join together to fight for the good of America?

I would like to cancel a job interview that is scheduled for later this week, because I have accepted another job. The only problem is, the interview is with a company I am interested in working for later on (it is located in another town and I would like to wait until I am finished with nursing school next year to travel). apparently many people i know have been there and they say its a lovely place but the people there treat visitors like trash. my frends are asians - korean, japanese, pakistani and wen they went to cafes and all, the waitors werent bothered to give them seats, and at malls people gave them the evils. any views on this?

I really don't understand everything that happened. The Pastor called for people with certain ailments to come forward. He then prayed over each one and as he finished each person would fall down. Some people would shake violently and then fall. ( of course there were helpers there to catch them). What was going on? Why would these people fall to the ground after being prayed over?

I mean what is nature? When something is natural then is it something that happens automatically, without any help? How can you not believe that there is some hidden force behind all that we see in the world that is 'natural'? Is nature not the hidden force? Would you agree that 'believers' equate this same force to God or The Creator? As a free-thinking human being, I cannot comprehend that things can happen by themselves. How do you explain them? I would appreciate constructive comments, and no bashing of others' belief systems. Thanks to all.

First off, we don't want children and secondly even if we did I was told a few years ago that I would have trouble carrying a baby and I most likely couldn't carry a pregnancy full term. Not a big deal to me, I've never wanted children and neither has my husband. So how do I explain that to people without coming off as being rude (even though I think that they are asking me a rude/tacky question!)??
