In it's original usage, 'gay' meant bright, cheerful, flamboyant or festive. (People do still occasionally use it as a synonym for 'happy', but it's not quite the same thing).
As an acronym, G.A.Y. stands for 'Good As You'; this was used a lot in the late sixties and seventies as an anti-homophobic slogan.
But in this context, and in this category, 'gay' means 'homosexual'. It can be applied to men or women, but it's more commonly used to describe homosexual men.

Depends on the context of use.
The boys and girls had a gay time..... Means they had a happy time...
He is Gay means that he is a homosexual.
