Because they think their experience (WASP, male, middle-class) was the same for everyone; anyone who didn't have that experience didn't deserve it. Privilege is a warm, cozy cocoon.

Then why did the conservatives destroy the 50s? The 50s were great economically because: there were unions (creating a good living wage, for the northern plant and factory workers), the jobs had not been outsourced (the country had not been outsourced to China yet). Let me tell you something conservatives, if people aren't working it's not because they have no values, it's because you dam supported the destruction of the infrastructure of this country: through outsourcing and way too low living wages. Think about it. Where are the type of jobs people had in the 50s, at now? hmmmm? There are not the same type of jobs anymore. The golden age you dream was based on a lot of things, you really don't like; but you people are not intelligent enough or intellectually honest enough to admit it. Typical conservative. I have never taken their "rationalizations" seriously or their true intellectual capacity on complex subjects seriously. They are juvenile.

Conservatives love the 50s because:
1. No abortions (not legalized, anyway).
2. No gays or lesbians (out, anyway, because they would be persecuted).
3. We had a powerful enemy, that the conservatives could use to scare us with.
4. Everyone was "Godly."
5. Economic prosperity (at least for big business, not so much for farmers and rural people).
6. Women weren't following the "Evil feminist agenda;" instead, they had a much more fulfilling life pumping out kids, they had no real freedoms, and were forced to fit into a stereotype.
You see, conservatives love the 50s because they had everything going for them back then. Nobody to question them, really.

blacks couldnt vote in the 60s either, women could not be cops in the 60s, it was illegal to be gay until the the early 80s, i was born in 62 and blacks were segregated in my school when i was in elementary school they lived on the outside of town, my best friend i have known since kindergarten is black and gay, we talk about being friends back when his own father could not legally vote, there have been alot of changes but to be honest there is more racism now then back then

I'm a black conservative and I don't have any illusions about wishing I lived in the 50s, though it would have been nice to actually see music evolve (i.e. in the case of black music go from blues to r&b to doo wop in one decade) which I guess will never happen again in the US (i.e. people will be happy listening to hip hop/rock for another 30/40 years).
