If I were to enlist in the Navy straight out of high school is there a certain rank which once reached would allow me to become an officer (degree pending)? And could I even obtain such a degree while still a sailor?

I'm interested in becoming a Surface Warfare officer... are there certain degrees that would be looked more highly upon than others? If so, which ones would you suggest?

My husband is in the National Guard and is currently on active orders in Iraq. He has a profile for some minor back problems and just does the walk instead of the run. His ets date is coming up and he can choose to re-enlist w/ the Guard and get a bonus but we've talked about him going active duty for more stability. Can he go active with a profile? What does he need to do to go active?

My college is having a drive to collect supplies to send to the soldiers over in Iraq. They gave us a list of items that they needs, but I thought I would try to send things that they receive less often in donations and therefore may need more. Maybe some of you have close family or friends in Iraq and know what things they are always short of or need more than others?

Also, it specifies no brand names for sunglasses, and no gum in stick form - why would that be? Just curious.

I was wondering if I could sign my husband and I up on a list for On-Post Housing? Or do I have to do that when I get to the base?
We will be moving almost 6 hours from where we live now, so I was just curious. I am going to call tomorrow, but thought I'd ask in advance.
Also has anyone ever heard of Off-Post Housing/Housing Referral? Are they helpful?
This is the first time hubby and I are going to move to a base so I'm interested in anything anyone can give. Thanks so much.

Why is this, so many people told me that they could actually get me out of some things. The marine recruiter said as long as I wasn't on probation and paid my fines off, I could go immediately. Why is this waiting period for the army? I wnated to go navy, but I know they wouldn't take me yet. BUT WHY THE ARMY, I thought for sure I could go, I wanted to go soon. Please someone help me out that knows about this.

I met the most amazing guy ever. Unfortunetly, the day we met he was on his way to the air force base where he's currently stationed (approx 4 1/2 hrs from where I live). We spend hours on the phone 2gether although we've never spent any time 2gether actually 2gether. Its really frustrating b/c his family is about 1 1/2 hr from me and he visits them often. Finally, I called him out about why he doesn't come visit me when he's at home. He claims he's already getting attached to me and doesn't want that to get stronger b/4 he's deployed to iraq in a couple months for a 6 month tour. Supposedly the military has taught him endurance and patience so when he comes back we can actually have a real relationship. I really have feelings for this guy and definetly could be patient if I knew I had something to look forward to...HOWEVER. Is it possible he can actually be this patient or is he just leading me on?

For what? For vengeance. Yes before when they were in war with Mujahidin in Afghanistan USA claimed that they too support the Mujahidin. The war brought to a collapse of USSR.

Putin also declared that USA are now too arogant for being a sole superpower.

The war in Iraq is already 4 years. Look if the US is really prepared and capable to control the Muslim insurgents the can end the war earlier.

Will this all make Russia to support Muslim insurgent in Iraq?

Or should we depend upon a powerful Navy and Air Force? Why have we been able to win wars in the twentieth century without a strong Army in readiness? Will these conditions continue to hold? Would a policy of universal training shorten our wars? Reduce our losses? Would such training in times of peace really prepare men for combat in a future war?

I'm sure some of them are, and I myself am going into the military, but it seems to be politically correct (for cons and libs) to call them heroes as a group.

I would say that most soldiers and policemen aren't in that profession because they're so incredibly altruistic and sacrificing. Yes, some of them display incredible bravery, but some of them are lazy, corrupt, or just everyday joes who really don't care.

So it bothers me when someone says that every one of them is a hero... because that's not true, and it degrades the true heroes that do exist.

No group is completely made up of heroes. Check out www.freeburmarangers.org -- they're a group of volunteer aid workers that trek into Burma's conflict zones to help the people there; but I'm sure that even some of them aren't truly in it for motives that are 'heroic.'

This is something that just bothers me, because it really does degrade the worthiness of people that really should be called heroes.

Let me make up a very unlikely situation that won't ever happen (at least in my lifetime).

If the U.S. just happened to pissed off the World so much that even its closest allies (Britain and Israel included) decide to war against the U.S.

And assuming nuclear weapons are not used, will U.S. still be able to win if it were to fight against the ENTIRE WORLD?
