Uniforms and weapons

Big, really big. The uniforms were almost the same as in WWII. Weapons were simple but functional. They had a lot of tanks and troops in East Germany, Checz-Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland. Sophistication was not in the Soviet priorities. It was scary looking at them across the border while in Germany.

Not bad. In WW2 they showed, after a terrible beginning (like all other nations) the ability to learn and play to their strengths. By 1944 they were out-fighting the Germans (the Germans lost a whole Army Group in June 1944 while the Western allies were crowing about D-Day).
This experience dominated their postwar doctrines. The Arab armies almost defeated Israel in 1973 after being drilled in Soviet methods- but they got confused by their own success and couldn't follow through.
They did poorly in Afghanistan, just as the Americans are doing poorly in Iraq- guerrilla war does not suit armies trained for mechanised warfare. The Soviets' weapons were generally lower-tech than the West's, but available in quantity, and the 'basics' were always good. For instance their tanks were fast, with decent guns and good armour, but they lacked computers and crew comfort. But they were never too far behind- certainly not 'crude' or 'simple'.
Training was hard, but the outright brutality was mainly in the special forces- just like in Western armies.

The Soviet Union Army is a formidable and well trained machinery with long coated and long sleeved uniforms due to cold weather but they have warm uniforms like the ones they used in Afghanistan before the Americans came.

Strict, brutal, efficient, and loyal. The Russian military is still like that. They aren't push-arounds. Never have been.

The guy above me seems to hero-worship them, however. They aren't that without reproach. Any army out there has its bad apples. Ours is publicized because we let our press get away with speaking out, unlike Russia (2nd deadliest place on Earth for journalists, after Iraq).

the ak-47 is STILL used and its still deadly as ever, our counter to that is the m-16. As for the army itself it had flaws just like any other but just as powerful as us at the time.
