I'm interested in becoming a Surface Warfare officer... are there certain degrees that would be looked more highly upon than others? If so, which ones would you suggest?

if you are looking for a scholarship, then look to engineering or technical degrees. if you just want to be a naval swo, then ANY degree from an accredited university fits the bill. I've seen engineers, phys ed majors, etc

A person can become an officer with most any degree, but the best would be a degree in science. SWO (Surface Warfare Officer) is just a qualification that an officer obtains during time on a ship. It's just like getting ESWS (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist) It just means that you can take the place of someone in a position if they are incapacitated.

i think part of the navy way is slots - how many are needed in a particular mos at any given time and the school schedule. You would have to get through OCS. The MOS you picked are regular OCS not direct commission etc. like the JAGS, medical etc. I think those MOSs that you picked have plenty of openings. Maybe it is easier to get Supply over Public Affairs. Navy always needs Surface Warfare. If you don't get promoted in certain amount of time in your rank (passed over) then you are practically out of a job.. I would find out what's in demand. If you are in a MOS more in demand then your promotion chances should be better.

Engineering. Most Surface Warfare come from the engineer corps.

Your best bet is Naval Engineering. Yep, there is such a degree, and it's not only available at the Naval Academy.

Depends on how you go about it. Graduates of Annapolis have varying degrees, if you go the NROTC route is much the same. But a bachelors degree is the minimum.
