I was wondering if I could sign my husband and I up on a list for On-Post Housing? Or do I have to do that when I get to the base?
We will be moving almost 6 hours from where we live now, so I was just curious. I am going to call tomorrow, but thought I'd ask in advance.
Also has anyone ever heard of Off-Post Housing/Housing Referral? Are they helpful?
This is the first time hubby and I are going to move to a base so I'm interested in anything anyone can give. Thanks so much.

It really all depends on where your husband will be stationed. At most Army post's there is a waiting list for on post housing. At the housing office they should have a list of appoved off post housing. You can usually go to the post's website and look at the housing page for local information. Feel free contact me if you have any questions on anything military related. I am prior Soldier and a Soldier's wife.

each base has different rules about when you can sign up for housing. some require you to report, others you can get on the list as soon as youhave orders.

The housing office willhave a list of available housing off base.. to include the set aside program, whereby they contract out so that you don't pay any move in or set up fees, or they are reduced. They will also have a list pf places to stay away from ,either becuase of crime or shady practices by the landlords.

yes, we got a house sorted before we arrived b at a new posting, about 3 weeks ahead of time, so we could move stuff in. I think it depends what is available, and how helpful the housing officers are!

All the above answers are correct since they're from "been there, done that" people. I just skimmed them, but I'm not sure anyone mentioned that only the SERVICEMEMBER can sign up for housing. A spouse cannot (without a special POA).

Normaly housing office will accept advanced applications with a copy of his orders with the detaching stamp on it. You must also send a copy of his Page 2 information to the housing office.
