It costs a civilian company and the military several hundred thousand dollars to start and complete a security clearance on one person. If a military person already has a secret or top secret clearance the civilian company won't have to pay anything to get you your clearance. Once you have a clearance it is much cheaper to do updates every 10 years than it would be to do the initial clearance.

When there are top secret projects going on either in the military, or civilian jobs, they need to do a security clearance on all people who apply for the specific project/job. The top people who choose these potential employees for these tasks need to do a security clearance, to make sure that he/she will not "spill the beans" about the secret project. I'm not sure, but I think it also includes a psych evaluation of the employee, and possibly their family. It's also, esecially in the military, top secret clearance is for peoples safety as well. To get troops into a certain area, complete a certain task, and get back out of enemy territory quickly, quetly, and safely. I hope this helps answer your question. Take care.

Actually, not much. Getting a secret clearance is almost routine. The real value is in getting cleared for Top Secret or higher, Top Secret SCI.

Just for the record they do updates to your security level every 5 years, not 10. Security clearances tell employers that you have a good background, no criminal history or history of bad acquaintances.. Also, that you can be trusted with valuable information.

A Secret classification (which is one step above rumor), means you are trustworthy enough, including your relatives to be entrusted with information dealing with subjects which if released would cause probable harm to the US. Release of Top Secret information would definitely cause harm to the US and its interests.

Clearances allow the employers and government to know whether a person has a criminal record to deny an application for work.

If you can't obtain one, you may be seen as a possible security risk, ie...you may be willing to sell secrets or aid an enemy, even in inadvertently...

because some jobs you can only get if you have one.
jobs are good for making money.
not everyone can get the clearnance because of their background. so if you can't get it, you can't get the job.
