Law Enforcement & Police - November 2007

[Selected]: All categories Politics & Government Law Enforcement & Police

The Senate of the State of California voted to restore public access to records and public hearings related to complaints about police misconduct, overturning a Supreme Court decision to block public access to records about police complaints and making police hearings public.

Should this be a nationwide measure? Would open scrutiny improve the widespread antagonism against the police in our country? Why would police departments who vehemently deny wrongdoing insist in keeping their disciplinary information and complaints so secretive?

First off, i would imagine they are often WRONG, but for the sake of an interesting show she's always RIGHT. Secondly, are profilers that involved? Out in the field like that, taking control?

$1600 disappeared! What should we do???
My husband and I were both paid on Thursday, by direct deposit, and it did go through, and was reflected in the balance since yesterday during the day.

This morning, though, $1600 is unaccounted for. Our available balance went from almost $1700 to $31.54 overnight.

Other than about $300, all of the money we've used for spending cleared, and was reflected in the $1700 balance. So the lowest our balance SHOULD have been is about $1400.

We can't find a number to call to our bank, there is only one branch, and they are not open again until Monday morning.

I'm worried someone got the number and has been using it, but I don't know where they would have got it from.

What usually happens in these situations? Will most banks write it off, or are we pretty much screwed, trying to last 2 weeks on $31, unable to make rent or our car payments, not to mention any spending, daycare, gas, groceries, etc?

A friend of mine was at a bank opening a new account. As he sat in the lobby, he noticed a rolled up paper that looked a lot like $ laying on the floor against the wall. He got up and walked over and picked it up and stuck it in his pocket. When he went out to his car, he was shocked to find it was $600, all $100s rolled up.

That night he called me all excited until I burst his bubble. I asked him, what if this had been some poor old ladies rent or grocery money. I told him he should call the bank and the police to see if anyone had reported it.

The bank said nobody had reported it. Only my friend told the bank he found it in the parking lot.

When he called the police, he mentioned finding it in the lobby and the officer said technically he could be charged with bank robbery. My friend flipped out and turned the money into the police. They said after 30 days it would be his. 30 days he goes in and the police say someone claimed it. Would not tell him who or how.

Can they do that legally. Lets say if I am driving home at 2 AM and can a highway patrol pull me
over at random? Does he have the right to search
my vehicle for open containers, drugs or firearms?
Is it true they do not need a reason to pull you over
especially at 2AM?

Let me preface this question by saying that I am not necessarily looking to injure anyone... I am only looking to scare the daylights out of the drunk French teenagers that like to hang out on my roof in downtown Montréal.
They're loud, rude, disrespectful, sit on the roof throwing glass beer bottles at those walking by on a main street... My bedroom and kitchen windows face the roof bit where they go up and I want to feel safe if they should ever, heaven forbid, try to break into my room in the middle of the night or something ridiculous.
I'd like to find out where I can buy an inexpensive BB/ Air gun that will make a LOUD noise and hurt a bit but not enough to cause real damage. I just want to scare the crap out of them while they're up there so they get out of my (and the rest of the city's) hair. Cops aren't much aid, either.
So, I'm looking for where I can buy it, how much it will cost, the best ones for what I'm looking for and what kind of ID/ paperwork I might need. Thank you.

Should I confront the old guy looking at porn on the library computer?

This is no joke!

I'm sitting in the college library right now. And this distinguished looking greyhaired old guy with a brief case and horn-rimmed glasses is looking at hard core porn. Should I confront him? Hes not breaking any rules.
