Yes... Different states have slight to vast differences in their laws. The simply can't supersede Federal Law.

And yes... many people have crossed state lines and gotten in trouble. Some cross state lines to EVADE trouble.

Either you're not American, or you don't get out much...

Warm regards,
Douglas

Yes many states have different laws for the same incident. Statutory rape is one. What is illegal in Ohio or Michigan is legal in Texas.

In some cases a states law conflicts with federal law. For instance some states have made medicinal pot legal or made personal use/possession of pot legal. But they are still violations of federal law.

You could be smoking pot on your front porch and have a state trooper drive bye and wave to you. 5 minutes later an FBI agent stops and arrests you.

What a country!!!

The United States is a dual federation, and the U.S Constitution expresses different powers to both the federal government and the state governments. States get to make a lot of the rules for themselves, and the federal government is handing more responsibilities to the states. I think it is your responsibility to educate yourself on the rules of each state if that is where you want to travel, and hence, they don't accept ignorance to state laws as a viable reason for breaking laws. It can get pretty complicated, especially when some states have really strange, out-dated laws compared perhaps, to the state you stem from etc.

I also find from many answers/guidances/suggestions given in yahoo answers that different states have their own laws in US.Regarding your second query, I feel the old axiom that ignorance of laws is no excuse will be applicable.

Laws and ordinances vary not only from state to state, but county to county, city to city and township to township.
