I've worked for Pizza Hut as a manager for 16 years and for 15 of those, if a police officer came into the store in uniform, he got his order free. About 50 stores were sold to a franchise earlier this year and now the cops get 20% instead. Needless to say, instead of seeing them 4 or 5 times a week, we get maybe 1 a month in now. We thought it good business because we figured they'd come quicker if we called them.

At both of the fast food places I worked at we gave all emergency workers free foods.. police, fire, ems.. Sometimes the managers would cut it off because of high food costs or unmatching numbers in the registers or ppl taking advantage. But generally, we always did. Some took it, some didnt. I think it is technically illegal under the gifting policy, but who cares.
We always had cops around and running to help if the alarms got pressed. Families with children felt safe coming to our stores after dark. The second store I worked for actually hired off duty officers to gaurd after dark, so they would all hang out. We had every officer on duty from 3 entities in our store all the time. Unfortunatly, many officers in many areas are the criminals. In the end in both places it caused lots of drama over who hung out with who, who flirted with who, who had the drugs, and who was sleeping with who. Not really worth it.

yes...and no. It depends on the location and department. For example in my area most departments in my area receive free food from a couple places and my agency does not.
Also in other cities nearby they don't do this.
But generally yes. Police officers also get discounts and free coffee too.
It's not good practice to accept this stuff but it does happen.

Yes, I have. I won't sit here and fabricate the truth, but in the few instances that I have, it was given to me without any questions asked. I did advise that I would rather pay, but my money wasn't accepted. I don't know about you, but I don't carry cash, only a debit card and I;m NOT going to leave my card at the drive through window because I insist on paying. It is VERY uncomfortable when places try to offer free food....I won't return to the establishment if they give me free food...

I worked at a restaurant with a food bar many years ago and the cops would come in and have a small snack off the bar, but rarely did they eat a full meal. It was free for them, along with a drink.

a lot of places offer it. It's not really kosher to expect it. If you are a regular at a particular diner, you may get friendly with the owner and it may be his policy to give to you for your presence during, say, a rush hour. It's still frowned upon in the South. Don't know how they do it up North.

We were not allowed to accept it.
On rare occasions when the owner insisted, I would leave the amount that I would have paid for the meal as a tip for my waitress or waiter.

I'm with Gonzo on this one. If they offer, I decline. If they refuse to take my money, I won't go back there in uniform again.
Free coffee when I'm working the night shift... well I'm not so ethical about that.
