The Gestapo (help·info) (contraction of Geheime Staatspolizei: “secret state police”) was the official secret police of Nazi Germany. The name itself came from the official abbrevation of "Geheimes Staatspolizei-Amt (GeStaPA)" and soon became "Gestapo". Under the overall administration of the Schutzstaffel (SS), it was administered by the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA) (“head office of the reich security service”) and was considered a dual organization of the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) (“security service”) and also a suboffice of the Sicherheitspolizei (SIPO) (“security police”).

Duties=to protect and to server, no matter the location or variables
Portion of population=All *law* abiding citizens expect official conduct and ultimate protection from our armed officers.
Personally, I embrace our American Law enforcement, as they have made a choice to protect people from the harms of the world. I'm not saying all laws are just, because offenses like M-Jane are ridiculous, but I am thankful for the laws that protect against violent crimes, and that is when police are most effective.
Lets face it, some police-men are corrupt, it's proven that some have an authoritarian complex, but not all of them are that way (by far).
If it were not for firemen houses would burn. If it were not for doctors people would die. Like wise PoPo is supposed to protect us so that unnatural crimes are evaded and we all can live in peace...so I expect and anticipate 100% ffulfillment of our officers, and thank the majority of them for making public service a career choice.
There are always going to be people that abuse their power but I think it's more important to recognize those that take the oath to do the right thing. Where would we really be without them?

There is a difference between a sheriff and a cop. The first is an elected position, and the higher offices serve the govt. The "regular" cop serves the community, ticketing and arresting the lawbreakers.

Cops protect the citizens of their community to the best of their ability. I can't stand when cops look bored to death as they are pulled over in some kind of "hiding spot" to nab speeders in the speed traps. I would think all population would expect that to be fulfilled.

Bottom line: A police officer will give his life to protect yours.
People forget about that at times when an inconvience of a traffic ticket makes you so mad you call him/her "Pig!" and stereotype them as all dirty.
But ultimately, we run towards the guns shots when everyone else runs away. We run up the towers when everyone else is running down. When you call 911, there were always be a group of dedicated men and women who will protect you and die trying to protect you.
Thats what we do.
We don't do it for money. If I wanted to be rich I'd do something else. Thank the next cop you see. Tell him, "thank you for your service."
The public expetcts us to do dangerous things to protect them. Honorable cops do it.

BY DUTIES DO YOU MEAN WHAT DO WE DO?
ENFORCE THE LAWS IMPOSED BY THE LEGISLATURE CALLED STATUTES.
STATUTES HAVE A SECTION THAT APPLIES TO POLICE, SHERIFFS, MUNICIPALITIES, TOWNSHIPS, CITIES, STATE POLICE?
THE STATUTES FOR ALL POLICE ARE FOUND UNDER CRIMINAL LAWS AND VIOLATIONS, CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY AND CITIZENS (CIVIL) AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE TRAFFIC CODES.
IF YOU CARE TO FIND THESE ITEMS OF LAWS, GO TO YOUR STATE.GOV(ALABAMA.GOV)
YOU WILL SEE STATUTE. OPEN AND SCROLL DOWN TO THE SECTIONS YOU WANT TO READ.
THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS SOME CONTROL OVER CRIME AND ENFORCEMENT UNDER THE RICO ACT, THE OMNIBUS SAFE STREETS AND CRIME ACT(1972 AND AS AMENDED EACH YEAR)
ALL OF THIS MATERIAL IS ALSO LOCATED AT YOUR MAJOR LAW LIBRARY ON A LAW SCHOOL CAMPUS IN YOUR AREA.
FEDERAL LAWS COME UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF THE UNITED STATES CODES (USC)

the basic duties of a police officer is to protect and to serve.
If they are doing anything out of the ordinary of that it is considered abuse of power and those are legal charges that could possibly go against them in a court of law if proven to be true.
