Bush tells America "we are bringing Democracy to Iraq"

Did they ever ask for it , know what it is or want it?

Trying to shove democracy onto people who never asked for it won't ever work.

Don't Abandon Us

Today, at an international summit on the future of Iraq in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, my government will asToday, at an international summit on the future of Iraq in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, my government will ask the international community to maintain its engagement in our country to help us achieve our goals of security and stability. We recognize that our request conflicts with a plethora of voices decrying the situation in Iraq and those in the British and American publics who seek an expeditious withdrawal from a war they claim is all but lost.

So why should the world remain engaged in Iraq?

There is no denying the difficulties Iraq faces, and no amount of good news can obscure the demons of terrorism and sectarianism that have risen in my country. But there is too much at stake to risk failure, and everything to gain by helping us protect our hard-won democratic achievements and emerge as a stable, self-sustaining country.

We remain determined in spite of our losses. Spectacular attacks may dominate foreign headlines, but they cannot change the reality that Iraq has made steady political, economic and social progress over the past four years. We continue to strengthen our nascent democratic institutions, pursue national reconciliation and expand Iraqi security forces. The Baghdad security plan was conceived to give us breathing space to expedite political and economic development by "securing and holding" neighborhoods across the capital. There is no quick fix, but there have been real results: Winning public confidence has led to a spike in intelligence, a disruption of terrorist networks and the capture of key leaders, as well as the discovery of weapons caches. In Anbar province, Sunni sheikhs and insurgents have turned against al-Qaeda and to the side of Iraqi security forces. This would have been unthinkable even six months ago.

Contrary to popular belief, most government ministries are located outside the Green Zone, and employees drive to work every day despite death threats and attacks on colleagues and families. We government ministers are always at risk of assassination. When a suicide bomber attacked parliament last month, the legislators sat in defiance in an extraordinary session the following day. I am particularly inspired by the commitment of the young diplomats in the Foreign Ministry, a diverse mix of Sunni, Shiite, Christian, Arab and Kurdish men and women who serve their country without subscribing to religious or sectarian divisions.

Iraqis are standing up every day, and we persevere because there is no other option. We will not surrender our country to terrorists. They have failed to cripple the elected government, and they have failed to intimidate us into submission. Iraqis reject their vision of a future whose hallmarks are bloodshed and hatred.

Those calling for withdrawal may think it is the least painful option, but its benefits would be short-lived. The fate of the region and the world is linked with ours. Leaving a broken Iraq in the Middle East would offer international terrorism a haven and ensure a legacy of chaos for future generations. Furthermore, the sacrifices of all the young men and women who stood up here would have been in vain.

Iraqis, for all our determination and courage, cannot succeed alone. We need a healthy and supportive regional environment. We will not allow our country to be a battleground for settling scores in regional and international conflicts that adversely affect stability inside our borders. Only with continued international commitment and deeper engagement from our neighbors can we establish a stable democratic, federal and united Iraq. The world should not abandon us.

The writer is foreign minister of Iraq.

So, this friend of mine was in a bar last night... one of his friends was "targeted" and beaten badly.... admittedly everyone was intoxicated. But... when my friend saw that his buddy was on the floor unconcious, he went to his aid and was apparently asked 3x by the cops to move out of paramedics way .. which he said he complied to. But, one "power hungry" officer decided that my friend had too much of a big mouth on him, cuffed him so tight that the cuffs tore into his wrists, and drove him to Headquarters... on many requests from my friend asking to please release the cuffs a tad as they were cutting into him.... my friend has an accent, and with that being said, when my friend asked if his cuffs could be released slightly, this "power hungry " peace office jeered and mocked my friend of his accent and said basically cry me a river...
well this power hungry peace officer then proceeded to (whilst my friend was still cuffed) take him (in headquarters) into a room, and hit him

Should states start demanding people and families to take care of themselves after a couple years of having been on assistance?

I work in the human services field and it surprises me to see how many people with children state that they don't work and demand to have financial assistance because they don't want too. Some of them do not work and request financial assistance for daycare when there kids get out of school for the day. It kills me to see so many hardworking people not spending time with their families because they are working for a better life. And because they do work, they don't qualify for assistance they may need to help lessen their burden. While others do nothing and get food stamps, medicaid, welfare, and housing. And is this a message we want to endorse to children. Study hard, try and pay your way through college while racking up debt and work hard or get pregnant young, have hard working citizens pay for you and your child's healthcare, education, housing.

Article:

"The 11 Republicans who confronted President Bush on Tuesday, and promised their continued support for a policy they know is disastrous, have committed an act of indescribable hyprocisy and shame.

On an issue of high honor involving life and death for thousands of American troops, they show the president their poll numbers and promise the president they will again vote for an escalation they know is wrong.

Someday Americans killed in action may reach 4,000 and Americans wounded in action may reach 30,000.

Perhaps the 11 House Republicans will return to the White House and read the president their poll numbers again.

Heroes, they are not. The tragedy in Iraq continues and they vote for it, again."

personally, I am not affiliated to any one party. I wait and see what every side (not just dems and reps) has to offer. Sometimes its a republican, sometimes a democrat, sometimes a greeny etc.

I think I have found who I want as our president. Ron Paul.

1. Voted against the Iraq war.
2. Wants to become non-interventionist nation (just like we used to be)
3. Wants limited gov't. (I know some of you will oppose this, but I think its a good thing)
4. Wants to get rid of the income tax (which only pays off the interest on the debt created by our gov't.....it doesn't go to any programs)
5. Though there are many other reasons, I would lastly like to say that he is simply a good and honest man...you can tell by the way he speaks. it isn't that phony political babble we are so accustomed to. Please, but aside your "loyalty" to whatever party you are affiliated with and seriously consider him.

Check out this 8 min montage of Ron Paul from the GOP debate last week.

that our President is fighting tooth and nail against benchmarks and a timetable for withdrawal while a majority of Iraqi lawmakers have signed onto draft legislation calling for a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq and demanding a freeze on the number of such troops already in the country.
