They should just issue picture SS cards.

Since everyone already has a SS card.

That would stop all the critism.

Put the cost burden on the federal government.

And have all the positive benefits of the real ID.

There is nothing I like about the Real ID Act. What this does is create Stalin like internal passport. Americans will need an ID to participate in ordinary activities such as boarding planes, entering into federal buildings, or apply for social security. And it can evolve to the point to where you will even need an ID to buy things such as firearms. Instead of filling out the 4473 form, they just simply scan your ID. All of your personal information is then put into a data base. They can then use it to see how many firearms you buy or how much ammunition you purchase. They can then put restrictions on the amounts that you can buy. And it doesn't have to be restricted to things like firearms. They can do the same thing with things like food, clothing, or any other things like these. Not to mention, it can be used for checkpoints. The government sets up certain checkpoints, and pretty soon you will need a ID just to get out of town. It is used to restrict travel just like Stalin did. Evolve to the point to where they can deny certain citizens their ID, and come to the point to where IDs are rarely issued. Again just like Stalin did. Then we have the problem of all of your personal information being stored in one database. This makes it easier for criminals to steal your identity. All this could happen with these cards. And in some cases they are. And if you don't think it could never happen here look at some of the things that our government promised they would never do. In the 1930s Congress said social security numbers would never be used as an national ID number. Now you can't even open a bank account without a social security number. In the 1940s they swore that income tax would only tax the rich. Now over 40 percent of our income goes into taxes. Read some of what the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, and John Warner Defense Act allows. I never thought this type of legislation would be passed on American soil, but it was. And if these things could happen, anything possible.

Like:
Minimize welfare fraud.
Minimize multiple identities.
Make identity theft much more difficult.
Make illegal immigrants just that - illegal.
Provide positive identification.

Dislike:
A central data bank of personal information that would be ripe for hacking or abuse, mismanaged or worse.
