Fish - September 2007

Now doesn't it make more sense to move the males from the tank and then just remove the females after birth? personally i don't even want to bother with removing any of the fish. how many can i expect to yeild/mo. if i just leave 2 males with 6 females and let nature take control of my 10 gallon?

I have a fish tank and I was just wondering how many gallons it is. the measurements are (centimetres) L = 62, W = 32, H = 40.
Do you need anything else to work it out?

I have a 10 gal. tank and would like to breed guppies as feeder fish for my 75 gal. tank. In the 75 ga.l I have a Knifefish that I am going to grow into a big boy (have done it before, they're cool and have awesome personalities). I don't care about the guppies at all, they're just a healthier food than petstore goldfish in my eyes. So, does this sound plausible? and to those with guppies, how often are you cleaning your tank? How many fry remain even after the parents have munched on them? I was thinking of doing 2 males with 6-8 females to jump start then cull the ones i don't like into the feeding tank. Opinions?

The scales are like a pinecone and some are falling off. My Brother owns a fish store but he is in florida for the week so i dont know what to do. can you tell me whats wrong.

My tank is 10gallon of peaceful community fish- and all of the sudden my red eye tetra has this spot- almost like a cold sore or a like her top lip is hanging off?? None of the other fish seem to have this, and I'm not sure what to do next? Do I take it out and isolate it until I figure it out? If I put her alone in a bowl she's likely get stressed and die anyway. please help! I just noticed it today, it was not there yesterday and I watch my fish very closely daily!

I am planning on getting some cichlids in the near distant future. My pH in my current 30 gallon is 7.2. With the cichlids I am looking into I need a pH of 7.8-8.6. How exactly do I raise my pH?
I am looking into having some Texas Holey Rock, if I can get any, or lava rock at the lfs. My substrate will either be the eco-complete cichlid substrate or having a crushed coral substrate. Will those alone help to raise my pH or will I need to do something else?

I have 6 black skirts tetrs. One has abnormally long fins, why? About the telling their gender, I read that the femail will have white spots on her anal fin, which one is the anal fin?! And I read that the female's anal fin will most likely be perpendicular to their stripes and the males will be more wide, what the heck does that mean?! they're all perpendicular to eachother! And how do I get them to mate?

And I have another question.

I put puppy in a separate tank while I was cleaning the main tank but I noticed that my guppy had a hump on his stomach that was not there before and his color was dull I was very worried about him but when I put him back in the main tank the next day he was fine his color was back and the hump was gone what was the matter with him? He sure gave my a scare since he is my favorite guppy

Hey i just bought a 10 gall tank (i already have a 55,29, & 20) and i am wondering what i should put in it.i want somthing weird , but cool{meaning i dont want tetras or somthing like that}. I think im going to get 2 ropefish, but IDK any ideas i would love to hear it. THX

I know what reverse osmosis is, the benefits, and how you can achieve reverse osmosis water. I plan on using it in my fish tank but I am not completely sure how to get it. I am thinking that the machines in grocery stores where you can refill a gallon container for about 33 cents (at my local store anyways) is reverse osmosis but if it isn't how else can I get it for my 24 gallon tank?

I have a 20 gallon tank that has been stable and up and running for months now, and the tank includes:
1 Dwarf Gourami
3 Black skirt tetras
3 zebra danios
3 leopard danios and
1Albino rainbow shark

I have done a lot of research on this and ive found that the most common compatible tankmates are danios and dwarf gouramis so i figured i would try it. I havent yet and wanted some adivice on the subject. I hope he can, but if he can't, are there any other fish that i can keep in it? *other than platies, mollies,and catfish?*Thanks a lot

I have a sponge filter with an air pump and the bubbles sound like a cauldron boiling. Is there anyway I can make them quiet? Are there different filters that dont produce such loud bubbles?

I had a fish tank for like 2 weeks with fish in it... I started off with 2 angels and one gourami. one angel died the first day. Then the other but the gourami was fine. Now theres 2 loaches, a catfish, one gourami, a tricolor shark. its a 55 gallon tank with a 60 power filter waterfall thing. The water is really cloudy now and it looks like yellow or green. What do i do? I bought a gravel vac that didnt work, so i just used a bucket to get some of the water out and do a water change. Then i bought a battery powered gravel vac and its still bad. What else should i do?

Today I bought a Figure 8 puffer, aquarium salt, and freeze-dried bloodworms.The puffer lives in a 2 gallon tank, and seems happy in it. I wanted to know whether or not freeze-dried bloodworms are right for it. The guy working at Petco said it was fine, and the Puffer shows interest in the worms. Thanks for any help.
