Most of the fancy goldfish grow to slightly under a foot, but Comets can grow to about 2 feet. This is why you should provide a fancy goldfish no less than a 15 gallon tank, and 20 by the time it reaches its full length. As for Comets, they should be provided with the largest (40+ gallons) you can afford.

They can get pretty big but I think it all depends on the kind of gold fish you have.

It depends a little on the variety as to how big each can get. Commons (with a single tail) can get up to 23 inches in a pond, although 14" is more typical in an aquarium. Fancy varieties (ones with a double tail like orandas, fantails, ryukins, pearscales, black moors. etc.) tend to be a little smaller, although these can still get to around 4-12 inches depending on the exact variety.

Goldfish may grow to a maximum length of 23 inches (59 cm) and a maximum weight of 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg), although this is rare; few goldfish reach even half this size.
