I have a 10 gal. tank and would like to breed guppies as feeder fish for my 75 gal. tank. In the 75 ga.l I have a Knifefish that I am going to grow into a big boy (have done it before, they're cool and have awesome personalities). I don't care about the guppies at all, they're just a healthier food than petstore goldfish in my eyes. So, does this sound plausible? and to those with guppies, how often are you cleaning your tank? How many fry remain even after the parents have munched on them? I was thinking of doing 2 males with 6-8 females to jump start then cull the ones i don't like into the feeding tank. Opinions?

Unfortunately, Guppies are very small, and your Knife would probably want about 5 as a snack each day. Guppies breed quickly, but not that quickly. I would start with two 10 gallon tanks. Put the parents in one tank, feed them daily, clean their tank weekly, and you will get fry. Guppies give birth to live fry (not eggs), so you could move pregnant females into the separate 10 gallon to breed, and when they finish releasing the fry, move the female back to the adult 10 gallon. This way, you will get about 1000 Guppy babies a month, plenty for a hungry Knifefish. As the fry get older, you can move them into the adult tank and feed your Knife the adult Guppies, and just keep that cycle going.

EDIT: You're right Ally, all the big fish should just starve... that would be much better... *rolls eyes*

What kind of knifefish do you have? i have a 28" clown knife in a 200g(4 years old). Anyways as for breeding them in a 10g would be plausible but the thing is you have to separate the fry, or they will eat all of them. I would buy a 29g+ and just buy black convicts they breed faster, and they dont eat there fry(from my experience) and they grow to 8" so you can grow them out to the size of your fish.

When my clown was smaller (like 10") i bought 6 pairs of convicts and bred them in a 55g i would have thousands of fry by the end of the month, and eventually the fry were to small to satisfy my fish and so i now use feeder goldfish from petsmart (i find petco and lfs to have dirty infected goldfish)

You are so mean. No fish should be feeder fish in my opinion and most certainly not guppies (not even the feeder guppies sold at the pet store). I don't care if the feeder guppies aren't colorful.

Well i say maybe you should try breeding white cloud minnow's because they breed verry easy and can handle lower temp's so you wont need to use heat or anything
