I have recently bought a betta, which was very colourful (blue and red) for the first few week, now it has gone a dull colour, showing dull horizontal lines across its body. Its no longer splaying out its fins and hides in small spaces or near the bottom - however it does seem to be eating. What is the problem with it? is it ill? Thanks

Two weeks ago we bought a red wag platy from a pet store which was apparently pregnant since there are now little yellow babies in with her(no, we did not know of her condition upon purchase) Our tank has not yet fully cycled so I'm a bit concerned about that. I bought first bites to feed them which I dissolve in aquarium water first to sink it since they are still too tiny to go to the top. When I pour it in it disperses all over the tank(29 gal with just mom and unknown # of babies) How will this affect ammonia levels? How often should I do it? Are the babies eating it? I can't tell since they are all hiding in the pirate ship. I got a breeder box and put 2 babies in it(all I could catch). I accidentally left the lid off and the next morning mom was in the box with her babies still alive! She did not eat them! She had been staying near the box when I put them in, but I thought she wanted to eat them. Wow!! So, I let them go back out in the tank. But how to feed them?

We have just been notified that our electricity supply is being interrupted for 6 hours while work elsewhere is carried out. How can I preserve the active bacteria in the 4' tank filter during this time?

I'm not naming names and don't want to start a war... I have a 90 gallon Mbuna tank. I have a trio (one male, two female) of Labidochromis freibergi, about 5" long. I also have a trio of Labidochromis caeruleus (yellow labs) about 3" long. A single Psuedotropheus Acei (very pretty fish yellow and purple) that's about 4" long and "spices up" the tank.
Because some people are very adamant about using chemicals and water supplements, I decided not to use them myself. My tap water is fairly soft and of a neutral pH. Some of these people associate low pH with water softness (which isn't always the case).
My first Psuedotropheus Acei looked horrible after about 2 weeks and eventually died of unknown causes. I found it in the rocks partially decomposed, must have been dead a day or two.
My yellow labs were originally a lemon yellow color. Very bright. Later they were a pale yellow.
I started using Kent African Cichlid Rift Lake Trace Elements and Kent Liquid Malawi Buffer.

I GSP and I have been watching him closely since yesterday morning. He has turned a very dark green. His spots are still visible. My other Puff Oden seems to be intently watching over him. If he is not eating he's resting on the bottom in hiding. I know they can change colors but it reminds me of ones that were dying at the store. I need to know what measures I can take other than buying a entire new aquarium for just him. He's in a mixed community now. A 45 gal. tank w/ (1) African Cichlid ( no aggression toward the GSB's), (2) Blood Fin Tetra's, (4) Sail Fin Platy’s, and (2) of eight Fancy Guppies that were food but has survived to reach a astonishing 1/2".
The tank's pristine check out MYSPACE.com paste below link into browser and view my vid's.

My fish tank has this wired smell i have never noticed it before so this must be something new, It smells like a pond, to me it smells like still water, the filter is always running and the actual filter it self is rinsed mostly ever 2 weeks. Also what can i do to get the smell away its a 30 gallon tank so i really don't want to change the water as that will take a long time.

seriously, what do you think a day is like for the magicman. He seems to always have answered a question within the last 20 minutes and as if by magic they are mostly right.
SO. ten points to the answer that best descibes what a day must be like if you're the magicman.
if you ARE the magicman your answer will be judged the same as everyone elses.
good luck!

I have lost 6 fish in the meantime. I took out the entire filter. Because the meds state that there should be no carbon filter in the tank. Is this correct? Should I just leave the filters on without the filter in it while I am treating the tank for fungus and ich. I took out the cabon filter and just left the filters on. Do you have any advice. Was this correct. What I assume the carbon filters is the entire filter. So there is nothing to filter the water at this time. The filter is just running the water thru and hopefully just generating more oxgyen. Is this correct? and how long should I leave the filter cartridages out before putting them back in.

I dont have a saltwater tank, nor do I plan to have one any time soon. I just had a question for the people that know a lot about them.

All the fish that are in the fish tank in the movie Finding Nemo, would they all get along together in an aquarium? Or is this unrealistic? I couldn't tell you the names of the fish because I dont know a thing about saltwater fish.

Just curious if they could be in a community together, or if some were too agressive.

I have a large Orinda (about 4 in.) that I got about 2 weeks ago. When he is going to the bottom of the tank he goes over on his side when he gets near the bottom of the tank and then rights himself. The whole process takes about 2 seconds. When I asked the store where I got him they said the tank he was in was too small and he will grow out of it. Otherwise he is healthy. What's the deal? I have done a water change and salted the tank, 1 Tbsp. to 5 gal.

Since transferring my goldfish from their pond which was leaking into a drum for a few weeks, where it got dark and warm I suppose, we have now moved them back into their pond with mostly fresh water and now two days later I have lost one and the other eight have a dirty 'veil' covering them or a grey thready look on their heads and fins. I am so sorry! Please tell me what to do. I thought their water was freezing and added a LITTLE warm water to their pond carefully. They seemed to like that.

Whats the best way of setting up a tank for a puffer fish? Brackish water not salt. And what puffer fish is the best to keep? Should I have more than 1? What other types of fish can I have with them? Ive heard Skats can be in with them? How much salt do u add to the tank to make it brackish? Is sand better? If so whats the best filter to have with brackish water or sand?

Ok. I've looked through a lot of fish. Friend of mine says I can have 4 or 5. So what do you think of this order(after crabs, snails, and cleaner shrimp)? Blenny, goby, percula clown, yellowtail damsel. Do you have any suggestion on other fish? I intend to keep the clownfish on the list.

I'm using the ice cube method, but I think that the ice causes the temperature to go down way too fast. I heard it's really bad for the fish. I just got home and my temp tank is almost 90 degrees holy california heat wave. Chillers are out of the question, they are like 500 bucks for one! Any other method that works, or should I stick to ice?

I would love to get some more goldfish and was thinking about one of the big circular bowls. My question is, do goldfish need anything to keep them entertained ie. weeds, little bridges etc. or is each other's company enough?
Also, is it cruel to keep them in a bathroom? (It is a very large bathroom btw so they would be no where near the loo.)
