Not many saltwater fish are even suitable for a 10 gallon tank. Your best bets would be to use a clown goby or shrimp goby. A firefish would be about the only other good fish to try. Even clownfish should have a 20 gallon tank. See the fish under "Nano Fish" in this link, but pay attention to tank size - "Nano" is considered 20 gallons or less, so not all will be okay for a 10 gallon: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=15

If you aren't able to use a larger tank, consider using more invertebrates - there are several species of snails, feather dusters (a type of worm), saltwater hermit crabs, emerald crabs, arrow crabs (that look like aliens), shrimp, and others to try. That size of a tank is even small to keep a sea star (starfish). See some of the invert choices in this link: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=497

Another option would be guppies. Yes, guppies. If you buy the ones for freshwater, and slowly add marine salt over about a week's time to bring the concentration up to a salinity of 1.024-1.026 (full saltwater strength) they will live. I currently have a trio spawning in a tank with corals. Makes a nice converstion starter for people who don't know guppies can be kept in saltwater.

Look at the website above is very informative I suggest you read it. I'm not going to type a lot because there is so much you need to know before you start. Here are the basics. Let the tank cycle for about a week or so. The water has to be perfect or the fish will die. They are so much different than freshwater fish. For your school project I suggest a freshwater tank. They are so much easier. If you really want to start a saltwater tank, they are a lot of work and I suggest checking out a book or something, look at the two websites above and you will have all the information you need!

Damsels, clownfish, tangs, triggerfish, angels and butterflies.

I think a jawfish would probably be your best bet, they're different looking and have a lot of character. He would need sand (at least 3 inches deep) as his substrate. They like to burrow and it's really fun watching them dart in and out of their holes (that is until you want to catch the buggers!).

A long nose hawk would also be a cool choice. These guys are full of personality and hardy to boot. They'll eat a wide range of foods and have a interesting looking body.

A clown would also be a good choice, not as interesting as the above listed fish (in my opinion) they're always a favorite and are hardy as well.

Be sure you plan about a month to get the tank fully cycled and prepared for your project. A ten gallon probably wouldn't take a month to cycle, but you can't really rush these things.

in case you desire hardy and eye-catching, try fancy tail guppies. they are fairly and vibrant, even nevertheless they multiply like loopy in case you positioned women with them. luckily that's the lads that are eye-catching. they are livebearers (no eggs, stay start). a large community fish. Very low priced. no longer puzzling to look after in any respect. They comply with any temperature between 19 - 26 ranges as properly. I somewhat have a collection and that they are large! in addition they do properly with different fish at the same time with mollies (yet another colourful fish). in case you desire something a sprint greater desirable than 2 inches then cichlids are a great decision as properly. they are colourful and school at the same time. desire this enables!
